Battery Light on when driving

My battery light has suddenly come on today coming home from work. Its a Fr 150 and I have not encountered this problem before. The light came on just as I went around a sharp corner. It remained fullly on for the four or five miles I had to travel to get home. Its not the fan belt as my power steering is fine and checked under the bonnet when got home.
Anyone out there has/had this problem. Is it safe to drive the car or will it die on the road somewhere with a flat battery. I suspect the aultenator has packing up. Is this a common fault. The car has just covered 60k. Any suggestions appreciated.

Its probably a faulty alternator, but you should check the plug at the back of it, all the earth straps and the battery connections.

I've had this a few times.
This was what I thought was due to the car being driven on short trips with loads of electrical sapping things on.
My resolve was to take the car out from a good hard long drive.
This cured this and have never seen this problem again
