Battery warranty

I took my Leon into Liverpool Seat for some warranty work, and was told that the warranty was void because of a third party battery. I bought the car with this battery in, and didn't check it when purchasing the car. My question is if I get a Seat battery from the breakers would they know I've changed it? I am planning on taking the car to another Seat specialist if I can get away with this.

Was the warranty work electrical? If it's mechanical I'd be asking them how a battery would effect it.

The start stop isn't working, it keeps coming up with an error on the dash. They told me it was an electrical problem, even though it worked for over a year until around 2 weeks ago

Batteries can cause issues with stop-start. It must be an AGM stop start battery. These can be damn expensive (£200-300), and often people just stick in a normal battery instead (£50-75), which gets stressed and then that causes electrical issues with the car.

If it is the right battery type for the car (different brand or not), it should be fine and I dont see how they can refuse warranty.

Not having the start stop working is a blessing in disguise. Bloody annoying thing

Code out the stop / start with obd11, get on with life blissfully happy that the car will no longer interfere with you at roundabouts.

The battery does support stop start, as it was working for over a year.

I will try another seat specialist, I got the feeling the workshop manager was just being an arsehole

A normal battery will work for a while fine, but it will be under greater stress, which can them cause it to fail and/or feedback to the charging systems causing other failures. Unless it specifically says its a stop start battery it cannot be used. Even then some cheap ones (like Lion batteries) still cause issues.

People are finding the same problem with batteries used in fast charge cars that charge at 18v in short bursts rather than 14v constantly. Cheap ones will work, but fail early, taking the alternator with them.

Could be as simple as needing a new battery which I expect would not be a warranty item unless the car is near new or if you recently bought it - but in the latter case you'd have to take it to where you bought it.

The good news is that I've not seen anything like 18V! Do ours ever do that?

No idea, it was just an example of how a battery type makes all the difference. Ford Focuses do it, and it can kill cheap batteries.

Looking into this more it seems like a failed, failing or inappropriate battery type can cause stop start issues. Just a new one might fix it, but its a risk you take, its not always easy to test a battery since even a bad one that has charging issues can produce 12.8v on a mulitmeter.

Doesn’t sound good. I’m getting flashbacks. A year ago I had some error come up on the screen about some electrical issue. I never read it well just assumed it was something to do with my car not seeming to be locked over night (which I’m sure that I did).
So my issues started happening with stop start errors followed up with battery low days later and power steering affected which came up on the dash. I got a free battery check at Halfords. Said it needs replacing. I go to seat instead to get it done because it’s a dealer battery cheaper than Halfords. This works great for a couple days then all issues come back. They started talking about an alternator. That didn’t resolve my issue. It went to the specialists. They couldn’t fix it.
But what ever they did it took 3 months to find this issue. And I’m non the wiser why it happened. But I was told they’ve never had an issue like that and I was the first.
The person that was looking after me was messing about and she wasn’t in when the car was ready and another advisor gave me the keys and said well sort it out when she’s back...I never went back so I dont really know why it happened. My car works.
But I hope you don’t get this problem. My warranty took care of the cost (most of it of around £2000+)

Depending on what engine you have the battery should be either an AGM or EFB type and should be coded to the car when fitted, if as you say it's not the original battery and is over a year old then it is unlikely to have any warranty unless you have the receipt for it and then it will only be with the battery maker or supplier.
My 1.4 Act has an EFB battery and I regularly get an error message come up about the stop/start, it's mainly because I don't use the car often enough, if I charge the battery overnight the stop/start works faultlessly for about a month.
