I have been getting a high pitched squeel for a while now - mainly when driving at motorway speeds in a straight line. It would go away if I turned ever so slightly either direction. This seems to have developed now in that sometimes (but certainly not all the time) I hear a more rough rumbling/grinding type sound. I think it is coming from the rear drivers side but it is hard to tell with just me in the car!

I'd agree with your diagnosis of bearings. It's often hard to pinpoint where it's coming from. I think it's more commonly the front ones as they have the weight of the engine to cope with.

One of mine went at around 40k miles I think, which is ridiculous but I was told it's a Ibiza/Polo/Fabia weakness. My old Fiesta was on original bearings at 12 yrs and 144k miles old.....

I was speaking to a mechanic about the various noises coming from my car and he said the high pitched squeel could be the brake pads being very low. Some pads have a metal tab that is designed to squeel when they get very low. So I might change the pads and see if that helps the squeel then pop it into the garage if it doesnt.
