Best Driving B Road Allrounder on JS Mani

Hey All,

Venturing into the lower end of bt for my mk2. Just bought a Jabba mani, downpipe and got a goosed vf34 thrown in too.

It`ll be built onto either a stock Agu (with rods), or a built Bam with an Agu head on.

I`ve done a lot of reading up using the search function, but the main info seems to have been more numbers based than how the different options compare in real driving scenarios.

Looking for a hard spooling set up which is at its best point to point on twisting Welsh B roads, there isn`t a single dual carriageway within 20 miles of where I live!!!

Happy to trade ultimate power against quick spool for useability.
Not after more than in the region of 340 bhp with good torque, although if my application would suit something a little less, that would be fine.

Like the sound of the big 16g, or the 18g, perticularly due to the fact they are rebuildable and many parts are interchangeable to tailor your own spec, or change it down the line.

If anyone could share their experiences with these or other options that will bolt onto the JS mani it would be much appreciated.

I`m possibly leaning towards the big 16g at present, but am open to other suggestions.

Also a bit of a curved ball, I also have an unknown t3/4 mani, but have no idea if anything I could bolt to it would be a good idea?

Cheers

IHI is a good spool for what you want. VF34 will come in just under your power goals if run reliably. Some say the TD05 Big 16G spools a little earlier than the vf34 and some say a little later and it holds power better up the rev range from what I have read and it can run about 320-360 bhp reliably. For country roads I dont think you would want anything that spools later or with more power as you would lose drivability and wouldnt be able to really get it going.

My IHI ( 16g) spools at just after 4000rpm and coming from the k03s it felt ALOT laggyer so i can imagine how owt bigger would feel, but if you dont want the expence of doing the internals id stay under 330 bhp , but saying that we all want more in the end....i do.

Just looked at some of my graphs and full boost with my IHI VF34 is at 3800 and peak torque at 4500ish (when the actuator is operating properly!).

The fact that the VF34 you have is goosed does point to some reliability issues seen on the IHI's.

Personally if I was starting from scratch or looking for a replacement I'd be looking at a TD05-big 16G setup. I was recommended the Evo 3 compressor version:

A good price too!

I remember you saying before that you had an IHI 16G and it had me confused!

As far as I'm aware the IHI turbos are designated VF something and the mitsubishi (MHI) turbos TD0 4/5/6 and 16/18/20G.

Is yours some special JBS hybrid? Would be interested to see some pics :)

depends what gear for peak boost rpm.
The big evo 3 version is the 16g6 not the 16g.
I'd go 18g aswell,i'd go for a FP18G.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the replies, some very familiar names from the threads I`ve been reading!!

After some previous research I had provisionally chosen an 18g, whilst I was collecting the parts for the job, including the peloquin`d box and Brembo`s with 2 pc ap bells n rotors from Jools` Custard Cupra.

Having read some more, was wondering if the 16g would spool earlier even if it might not make the same top end.

Wilko, would you have any graphs of your 18g you could post up, and does anyone else have any from a big 16g.

I`ve read a few references to Bill`s fp green, but what are the differences. or what is special about the fp turbos?

Also what is the deal with JAWarehouse, are they cack copies or worth a go?

Stew, cheers for the link, thats been added to the favourites list!

Thanks again!!!

I'd go FP mate, alot better reputation.
18g is about 10% more flow than a 16G6

Forced Performance are FP. FP green & FP Red, BUT neither will fit onto a jabba mani as the comp housings are too large to fit that close to the block on the JS mani spacing.

good turbos tho, albeit a frustrating company to deal with at times.

Deadbolt turbo also make a clone Super~Zilla which is an equivalent of an FP Green

both of these are lagier but well over 400bhp turbo's so maybe not what you are looking for.

IHI VF34 is good spool, but exhaust side is a choke and when cranked up will run hot, and bearings are a worry when spooling hard. Very drivable tho.
GT28RS on a full-race manifold recently was a very similar drive to the VF34, but seemed more gutsy.. not that relevant I know as its on a full-race manifold, externally gated, and a few steps further down the evolution chain from JS IHI based install.

Dont chase the big power (which I dont think you are) as it has to be both tractable, suit your driving, your gear ratios etc....

good luck
