Think you're correct re using 50% throttle & zapping up the box pronto, then maintaining a steady speed.

Was once lucky enough to borrow a then-new Jag S-type R :p (1900kg, 4.2 supercharged V8, 400bhp/400 lb ft = juicy beast) for 10 days.

At 1st it averaged 17mpg - eek! :(

So, tried using 50% throttle during acceleration from rest/slow speeds, so that the autobox (6-speed) would swiftly change-up, short-shifting, using engine's torque as opposed to revs/power, & used cruise control as much as possible, even at 30mph in town (light traffic!).

Result: 24mpg av. :D

Maybe apply the same change-up principle to a LC/LCR - they've enough torque! - while also applying the 'anticipation' rules?

...When slowing you use more fuel in neutral then if you are in gear slowing.

So if you traffic has stopped ahead, slow early and leave it in gear, try to minimise the time you will be sat still in traffic...

Intrigued, would assume that when coasting-in-neutral the engine uses less gas cos it's at tickover revs (ie low); as opposed to coasting in-gear with foot-off-gas, which can raise revs &, surely, suck in more fuel?

Or is it the ECU being clever with its air/fuel mix?

Could you please explain?

HonestJohn.co.uk's (the Saturday Telegraph's used-car guru) road test of LC 1.8 T says "the long gearing of 25mph per 1,000 rpm in 6th also gives potential for remarkable 43mpg economy at motorway cruising speeds." What?! :-o

Later in article, he also says it's "always been a pleasure to drive returning up to 34mpg if I took it easy."

Yeah fit an ecotek and then problem solved... The first time you try and use the brakes they won't work and then you'll write the R off... Then because of a "modification" the insurance wont pay out and you'll be push-biking it to work every day :D

Exactly - it's like a kind of natural selection for people who fit pointless bits to their cars. :)

yep you are right mate, they are designed to be thrashed, when i brought my car i drove it around quite carefully and tbh they really dont like it...give em the beans i say...

for the first time in ages i actually checked my MPG the other day and i saw 31MPG how?.....normally its 24....it is unning 270 BHP so thats brilliant..worst ive ever seen is 19 MPG...

anyways, i turn the aircon button off (bottom left) to save a bit of fuel, along with not coasting in neutral....- i never really knew this till i tried it. i have to travel down a few hills from work, and most of the time the traffic is only moving at say 10 mph, so i wack it in neutral and roll. thinking i must be saving fuel, when in fact im not, i just wack it in 3rd and it is better....i dunno you learn something new everyday dont you..

I've been getting 42 MPG out of my car quite easily.
AND 19 MPG lowest your not trying mine is 12 MPG now that was fun:)

As above I have gotten 42 MPG several times out of my 230 BHP LCR. This has been confirmed with my odometer and filling up to brim, driving 100 miles then up to brim again.
It is possible but does take alot of concentration. I did it as per most peoples instructions, give yourself plenty of time for your journey, plenty of space between car infront of you, plenty of time for corners and very little acceleration. I think a good handling car helps aswell as it saves you slowing down for corners:drive1:
One thing I did find was that I was far more chilled out when I got to my destination than before.
Admittedly I do usually want to pass everyone and drive 'a little' over the speed limit.

Probably got the 3 and 4 the wrong way round!

i'm gutted i aint got a MPG trip meter, but now im taking it easy and not coasting evertime i get to a hill (which i thought would save me more fuel before) and just being really gentle with my right foot, ive got no complaints with the fuel, i had a 1.6 alfa romeo beofre and i think that was alot worse on fuel!

Probably, all you people saying he couldn't have got 43MPG, can't actually drive properly, and use the throttle as an on/off switch.

43MPG is easily attainable in a Cupra if I can get over 40 in an "R".

not in mine you couldnt... even before bt. and i think id have been in a ditch a long time ago if the pedal acted like an on off switch.
