In my opinion if ur wanting to go with a DIY map.

You might as well adjust your waste gate to as high as possible to get maximum boost pressure you be doing just as much damage.
Please don't do it

I wouldn't say that, I think there's a lot of good diy maps around but I do think you should make sure you use a respected tuner and not just some £50 thing off the net. A lot of the respected tuners in the states sell their maps to upload yourself, usually with a small device for uploading it. Once you have your tune loaded you then do logs to make sure everything is where it should be.

If you want to buy a BS map they do give more power but I'd be worried about damage to the rest of the car. The ecu is the easiest part to deal with if it goes wrong, it can either be reflashed with the original file or replaced but who's going to guarantee the turbo, injectors, pistons etc?
That's the real issue, injectors out of balance, turbo pushing harder than it should, pistons can easily get damaged by bad fueling. People think because there's more power then the map is decent but you only need to shove more fuel in and add a bit of boost to clean up the burn to get a power hit.
Also considering this is in the Mk4 ibiza section the car can't be that bad? Must still be worth a few quid at that age?

With that said though the mpps cable works a treat.

well talk about mixed reviews lol, im going to do it, people may say if engines blowing up etc etc and yes its a posibility but if you have common sense you will be able to tell if its overboosting or doesnt sound right, and turn it off and put the original back on. There seems to be a grey area wether these generic maps actually work so im going to buy a cheap ebay cable, and a map, and try it, if it works ill keep you updated, if it doesnt work, ill either cry or deal with it :p

They do work, that's not the issue at all, I know for a fact they work. My issue is how they've been done. I would recommend doing some logs and checking the injection etc, being a PD means you can easily check the injector balance and stuff like that.

I suppose that you pays your money and makes your choice.

Whichever route you take there's more strain on the engine and everything downstream and there is always the risk of possible damage subsequently.
I can't see you getting any worthwhile guarantee for a car with significant mileage, even from one of the more reputable companies. They are always going to deny responsibility and blame wear and tear or aggressive driving or some similar stock excuse.

Nothing beats doing your homework and taking appropriate precautions and to this end I plan to visit a local agent for ........(can't remember the name) but they are a well respected national company.

Going the DIY route may not be as cheap as it seems at first glance as to do it properly you need some OBD cables,
logging equipment, software and know how. It all comes at a price.

I still have some warranty from the main 'stealer' and should something catastrophic happen during the next 9 months, what I could do is to revert to the original map before getting the car fixed.

This would be far easier with a DIY map than for a 'professional' remap.
(Not that I am recommending this as a course of action but it is something to consider).

Remap insurance

In some ways I regret asking my insurance company about the extra premium if I had a remap on my Altea.

Straight away they said it would invalidate the insurance. [:@]
Will have to look around for a different company as renewal time comes around.

Did I do the right thing being up front with them?:foot:

Suppose that I was involved in an accident and someone was seriously injured or killed and I was taken to court.
The insurance company would have the vehicle thoroughly investigated and when an undisclosed remap was found, the insurance would be invalidated and I personally could be held responsible for damages.

For myself, tough luck as I'm getting on a bit but for the sake of my son and the grandchildren, I wouldn't wish to deprive them of everything that I have worked and saved for over my lifetime.

Now if remaps were completely undetectable, it would be a different matter and I could increase my driving pleasure but they are not.

I bought a blacksmoke remap for my pd100 and wasn't impressed at all... Went on to get a hidden power remap and it's in another league

I've got Blacksmoke remaps on two of my cars and can't fault them to be honest. I can't say they are better or worse than the more expensive alternative but I'm happy with them. I have two maps for my Golf 130, I ran the 180 map for the last 18 months or so and it's bean great, a little smokey and the clutch slipped but it had done 100k. I've just swapped it to the 165 map as the old girl isn't getting any younger.

I've mapped my pd140 Leon today, very happy with it so far, no clutch slip and no smoke. I want to take it to a RR to confirm the power output
