Blocked washer jets

Hello,

After buying my 2013 Leon a couple of months ago I tried using the washer jets and the drivers side wasn't working. I took it to the local garage and they said it was blocked up. Then on Wednesday both washer jets stopped working. I took it to the garage again and they said it was blocked up again and they'd do a full flush if it happens again. The guy at the garage mentioned some sort of special windscreen wash that prevents blockage. I'm just using Halfords screenwash, the standard ready to use kind. Is this ok for the Leon?

I've used those before on my 2013 LEON as well. I'm assuming the blue one that is good down to 'only' -10 degrees.

I haven't had any issues, but I did dilute it a little. I'm guessing you just dumped it in as it is? Also how frequently do you use your washer jets? Sometimes I have some annoying spiders building webs near the nozzle.

PS: I also had the headlight washers, so my wash tank can accomodate the full 5l if it wanted to...

Recently I've changed screenwashes (as I was reading reviews on 'best screenwashers), I now use AutoGlym Screenwash & Sonax Extreme Screenwash. But have to mix it myself, and also depending on the weather....it's not because the Halfords ones were defective in anyway (at least from my experience).

the only problem ive ever had similar to this was a leak on one of the pipes to the washers but not on my leon

What you could do is disconnect the pipe to the washer and then activate it and see if water comes out then you will be able to see if its a washer problem or the pipe/pump

PS point the pipe away from the engine or into a bottle

Yeah I used the ready-mixed kind so I didn't dilute. It was the pink one, which I think is just the berry scented version of the blue one. I just dumped the whole bottle in. I have the headlight washers too. They work fine, as does the rear window washer. It's just the windscreen washers that get blocked up. There maybe some stuff left in there from the previous owner that hasn't been flushed out yet.

oh the pink one till -25 degrees I think. I think that one didn't get such good reviews (if I remember correctly) with ppl saying it left a lot of residue on the bodywork / screen. Perhaps it also left the residue on the nozzles....I'm guessing yours is standard (fires 3 lines of water) nozzles and not the fan ones..

I can recommend Autoglym Ultimate Screen Wash. never had an issue with blocked jets or freezing

Yeah that's one. I don't have fan washers just the 3 lines job.

Ok, I think I'll give that a go. It's actually full at the moment so Ill need to wait until I get my low level indictator.

Washing your headlamps will help finishing the bottle early...luckily for us with headlight wash, when level is low, the car will tell us, same can't be said of non-headlight wash cars, when it's out, it's out, no warning!

Btw...the Autogym Screenwash comes in 500ml bottle, so get ready a bigger bottle to mix it in... or you can chuck some or all of the bottle in, followed by lots of water...Last time I checked, Halfords were selling it for £2.95 or something, but that was 2-3 months ago.

Yeah I didn't realise I had a low level indicator until it went off the other week. So I dumped a load of halfords screen wash in it. Next time I'll go for Autoglym, though I don't think the halfords stuff is to blame for the blockages.

If you mix the wrong two/three screen wash additives they can go a little"gooey" and block the jets, as suggested remove the hose from the back and check it is getting a good flow to the jets, if yes, then remove the jets from the car and clean in a solution of hot water with say a steradent tablet or something similar to clear the blockage, you can check they are clear by blowing through them.

Could be that the previous owner just used tap water which can cause nasty stuff to grow in the tank/pipes.

Thanks for the advice guys, you could be right about the tapwater. Pretty bad limescale around here.
