blue smoke please help

has anyone on here changed there own turbo an if so how easy was it an did you do it from the top or bottom of the car? ive had blue smoke for a while now an im sure its the turbo thats gone, im using quite a but of oil an car feels a bit slower then before. what needs changing when put new turbo on im guessing turbo to manifold gasket an turbo to downpipe gasket, do the nuts also beed replacing? i also no will need to replace oil an coolant but do i need to do anything else?

reasons i think its the turbo is when start up in the morning dont get no smoke until engine has warmed up an if was stem seals i would have thought would see smoke straight away when i started the car up as oil would have leaked into the cylinders while on engine switched off an i also have a bit of oil on the intercooler pipes. if i leave car on tickover for a few mins then rev the engine i get a big puff of blue smoke an smells funny, i did think about breather system but cant see how that would use so much oil. also car peaked at 22 before an now only 19-20. been quoted by crn turbo to fix mine an get hybrid treatment so hopefully going to do this.

dont think i get smoke on overrun neither its happening when been on tickover for a while or when rev engine hard,

i have some vidoes below

Sounds like piston rings mate. If your using oil it means the oil is seeping past the rings to top of the piston and is in turn being burnt off when they reach top dead centre and then excess oil and fumes etc goes in to exhaust from the valves. Reckon if you take the head off top of piston will be covered in oil this also supports the fact that the plugs are black.

Generally turbo smoke is white. I'd be very suprised if its not rings everythings you've described brings it back to my original diagnosis. Just because a compression test has been done doesn't mean they cant be worn. If its been done with a gunson tester with the dial then i'd ignore it. They're just a guide and not exact. Seriously mate really think its rings

You could always just take the pipes off the turbo and have a look for oil - also take the exhaust off and see if there's oil coming there too. TBH if you're even thinking about engine work, you need to get some investigating done.

well i'm only going by my previous experience with other cars i've worked on. Had this problem with a galaxy turbo was pouring white smoke from exhaust. Put new turbo on run it for few hours to clear excess oil from exhaust and was ok. And my other car was same description as pauls and mine turned out to be rings with blue smoke. we're on here to help with our previous knowledge not for people to tell you your wrong but yes your right it could be stem seals BUT given the other points he mentioned thats what made me think rings. Everyones car is different and can have the same description but be two completely different problems. Given what paul has said now it does sound like turbo. Good luck paul, keep us informed.

right guys got back from garage today an for those who want to no the problem is the turbo seal. Its only smoking when on idle as seal not being made. Also its not stem seals as been told if stem seals when engine is braking a vacuum is bein made in cylinder an if stem seal is damaged would draw oil into cylinder an cause lots of blue smoke. Also not piston rings because my compression results were good. an blue smoke is defo oil being burnt. So anyone no how easy it isn't to change a turbo :(
