body rear lights, unscrew an....

I've recently noticed my brake light has blown and having tried to remove the cover i resorted to the car manual and it simply states to unscrew and PULL!!!

obviously i dont want to crack it and end up forking out lots of $$$$ does anyone know what holds it in place and where its located and what direction im supposed to pull the light. is there anything on the inside i can push off to help it remove itself?

The rear lights are a SOD if they're stiff.

Right here goes......

Undo the two black screws that screw the light to the bodywork in the boot shut line and remove them.

Place your fingers on either side of the light unit and pull it towards you out of the body work. If you have a loose one, it will come out (it's held in with spring clips). Persevere with this, the light needs to come towards you as you face the back of the car.

If you cannot get it out, WRAP A CLOTH AROUND a flat headed screwdriver and insert it between the light unit and the bodywork on the side of the car (the spring clips are this side). Use the Screwdriver to lever the light unit out. The light unit needs to go away from the body of the car directly backwards.

Be VERY careful if you have to resort to this, it is all too easy to damage your light or your paint.

Once the unit is out, remove the electrical connector and replace your bulb.

TEST YOUR LIGHTS NOW. It's a real pita to put it all back together to find the light doesn't work.


Good opportunity to clean in there too. It will be mucky as hell!

Push the electrical connector back on and push the light unit into it's hole (you may need to give it a slight bump with the palm of your hand to overcome the spring clips and get it sitting right).

Re-insert the screws and you're done.

quick question regarding this. My passenger side brake light has gone recently. Can it be fixed under warranty? I know it's not th hardest job in the world but if someone else can do it for ya for free

No, it will be classed as a wear and tear item and so not covered under warranty. They will charge something stupid, bulb costs 50p and labour is at 0.2 hours.

BMW cover bulbs for the first year so might be worth a go, dont ask you dont get!
