I think that as they are that common a problem across the range, VAG should be replacing them free of charge. It is obviousley a manufacturing or design fault.

Consumable mate, they should last you 2-3 yrs. However saying that i do believe some have had them changed free of charge on warranties!

Yeah as soon as you put load on it, it will misfire.

Not unless your 'new' replacement of coilpack 1 is dodgy also!

When you replace the others, fit a brand new 1 into number 1, and then fit the 1 you've just removed from number 1 into number 2. If number 2 starts misfiring you'll then know you've got a dodgy coilpack.

Are you still getiing misfire on cylinder 1 though or is it on another cylinder?

Don't know mate, I have vag-com but not a cable, hense my expert who has all the proper vag equipment. Any other way you can tell which cylinder it is??

I suppose it could be a dodgy new coilpack, but that would just be unlucky!!

I suppose that they are consumible's, just gloryfied HT leads really!!

Right well I have replaced all of the coil packs and just taken the car out for a spin and the same problem.

The car pulls and the turbo spins up to 3k rpm and then hesisitates, the turbo sounds like it has stopped spinning and then slowley accelerates around to the red line, but this only happens on full throttle and full boost and the engine light flashes.

If I am on half throttle and not a full boost then the turbo continues to spin and the car accelerates and pulls as it normally would on half throttle.

However, if I accelerate up to 3k rpm and full throttle, wait for the hesisitation, off the gas and then floor it again, the turbo spins up as per normal on full boost and then the car goes mad and pulls fully right around to the red line.

There seams to be some sort of boosting problem on full throttle over 3k rmp. Anyone got any ideas, this is starting to sound and get expensive :(

Well just vag-commed the car and I now have a misfire on cyl 1, 3 & 4.

I have changed all the coil packs and I can now only think that it must be the plugs unless anyone else can think of anything??

Has to be plugs then if your still getting misfire detection codes.

If you hadn't mentioned vagcom fault codes i would have suggested looking at MAF/N75.

Well just got back from my expert and they wanted to rule out everything so he ran the diagnostics and it was misfiring on cyl 1, 3 and 4. He dicided to change the plugs as a start and this did make a difference but not sort it 100% but did get rid of the misfire.

As for the non boosting of the turbo, he took off the MAF and lambda and the N75 valved and cleaned them all up and the put them back in, cleared out the fault codes and the car now runs, I think, better than it ever has.

It idles smoother, pulls through the range quicker and smoother and it seems to have gained a bit of power as well.

All in all it has cost me about £180 for parts (4 coil packs @ £92, 4 NGK platinium plugs @ £41 and labour) which is not bad but not £180 I wanted to spend but hey ho never mind.

Thanks for all the posts guys, most appericated :)

Had a bit more fun and car trouble yesterday. Was driving around a roundabout in Farnborough, engine light started flashing and the car lost all power.

I managed to get off the main road onto a side road and the car cut out.

The engine would turn over but wouldn't start and I had a strange combination of lights on the dash.

When I turned the ignition on, all the normal lights apart from the engine management and EPC light would come on, the TC light would flash and then stay on along with the battery light.

Called out the RAC and his computer wouldn't talk to the car so we couldn't find out what was going on.

We checked all the usual things and then I noticed that then we locked the car and opened the door, the fuel pump didn't prime.

This led us too look at the fues and number 37, i believe it was, had popped. RAC man replaced and it popped again. Changed another fues that had gone as well and then this fuse again, reconnected the battery and the pump primed, so we started the engine too see what happened.

Well after the RAC man put out the fire from cylinder 4, I sent the misses home to get the original old coil packs out of the bin.

We took out the 4 new two day old and replaced with the new and all is working fine now.

No idea what happened but it appers that coil pack 4 was faulty and burned out and caught fire.

Well a bit of fun and games!!
