Bought an FR. hate the ride.

I'm considering getting both Eibach Pro Kit and Koni FSDs done at around the time of my FR's first service. I'm almost used to the ride but at the same time I wince whenever I look in the mirror and see my sleeping baby's head getting bounced around in her car seat... poor thing. I'm also a little bored of 'explaining the sporty ride' (i.e. making excuses for the shocks and jolts) to passengers - I'd much rather it just wasn't an issue.

One point that I don't think's been mentioned yet in this thread... does this kind of modification affect your insurance? I mean, most insurers would charge you more for a 'lowered' car, would they not?

I was considering changing just the dampers to FSDs as this won't lower the car any (lowering is not my goal) and thus I hoped wouldn't affect my insurance... but jcp's comments in particular are making me think I ought to bite the bullet and get both springs and dampers done. After all, I don't want to end up paying for two rounds of expensive labour and alignment checks etc if I can get both done at the same time... and the springs are relatively cheap.

Any comments on the insurance question would be very welcome! :)

Well any thing that is deemed to not be of the standard specification is meant to be declared, quite alot of your run of the mill insurers will cover things like that and non standard alloys as they are not performance enhancing, if you dont declare them insurers can take a dim view on things like that to be honest, I didnt declare some alloys on a car i had an accident in and when they inspected it they refused to cover more than the cost of standard alloys! that was lucky they can cancel your cover for not being honest as it is technically fraud.

with my car I am going through Adrian flux to cover everything done to my car, they then find an insurer that will cover you, all my mods are covered on a like for like basis and anything that is not performance enhancing is then covered without further cost, I got this for about a third of what your normal run of the mill covers would have cost and I get a better deal I have no voluntry excess, i get £2000 of cover for audio £2000 cover for personal pocessions so not bad deal at all! :funk:

I declared my koni FSDs when I had them fitted to my then 8 month old FR. It's not worth the risk of having your insurance invalidated, especially on such a valuable car. My insurer (privilege) didn't charge me anything extra for the koni FSDs.

I was considering eibach springs as well at the same time, but as they lower the car my premium would rise by 50 quid. Couldn't see the point of paying that out on top of the springs + fitting so I skipped them and went with only the FSDs, nor paying the extra for the lowering springs in each annual renewal.

Just got sportlines installed last night. Few pics before and after. I have had cars lowered before etc, but these have to be the best springs I have ever used. The ride is stil amazing comfortable.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear, but it was always my intention to declare anything I changed to my insurer... but I wanted to know how roughly much extra it might cost typically for (a) eibach pro kit springs or (b) Koni FSDs or (c) both. :)

depends on the insure tbh, i declared them to direct line when i had the Focus and they didn't increase the premium they just charged me an admin fee and put my excess up, HIC do the same although they are much less on the excess compared to mainline insures, HIC also replace like with like where as no modified brokers would replace with standard items. I doubt there would be much increase between fitting either or so really the onoly way to find out would be to call your insurer.

Whether you have 17's, 18's or 19's, they will all have the same overall diameter, give or take a few mm, because you will have a correspondingly lower profile tyre as you go up in wheel size. The wheel offset will be the issue for clearence.

I honestly don't know if the ride is hard or not. But I got the feeling the ride is high. Although my cay is sitting on 18'' shouldn't the low profile tyres (225/40) compensate?

The overall diameter of the wheel+tyre should be the same. If you replace 17" wheels with 18"s, then you will need to use a lower profile tyre, to keep the overall wheel+tyre to the right dimensions.

This makes no difference to the ride height - that's more an issue of the suspension.

It could be a failed shock.

Notice it's been a month or so since people were getting new springs:
Sportlines - pwskingle, SteveTDCi, belfastchris45
ProKit - daz_pd
Considering the same thing so any comments on the improvements gratefully received!
