Cleaning under the bonnet today and I was trying to check the brake fluid level, fluid was changed last year so is clean and was hard to see through the plastic so I took the lid off, does the yellow plastic insert come out or is it fixed or not? put the hand lamp at the side of the tank and did manage to check the level, was ok but just interested. TA.

It will come out, but its not easy and you may end up distorting it. You see quite a few cars with it missing!

Quite challenging getting a powerful light to shine into these tanks and be able to pick out the fluid level.

I've never ever removed the screen/sieve as I can extract enough fluid without doing that prior to changing the fluid - so for me the screen/sieve stays in all my cars.

Edit:- I think that there should always be some fluid above the base of that screen/sieve when the level is correct, normally from "car new" the fluid level will start well above the MAX line on the tank.

Cheers guys, I changed the fluid by pumping the old fluid into a bottle through each bleed nipple in turn whilst Mrs stood by and topped up level as it went down, had a wee go at removing the sieve but when it didn’t come away easily it was best to ask before t broke, should just use the blue competition fluid.

I'm a traditionalist (maybe), as I always stick with the yellow tinted fluid that VW Group sell for all their cars - but using the blue tinted fluid would solve the "where is the fluid level?" I'd think.
