If the rev counter is for that engine, could be a transplant with original clocks, being a rally car they dont have to work properly do they?

If you watch any racing,rally/track most in car shots will show a working rev counter,they are needed!

believe me ,our kids 2.0ltr 8v octavia has a bigger block than that,and iirc a metal ilnet manifold rather than that placcy one,last time i saw a placcy one like that was on a 1.8 20v,or smaller.
anyway its deffinatley NOT a 1.816v

jason its an aeg 2.0 8v, its an old engine and the inlet may just be a localised colour thing, ie brazil use one material and europe use another. as flapper says that engine i posted has the same engine cover mounts etc and everything.

2.0 8V with the 1.6 cross over head conversion is a possibility. The enging positioning and intake tube looks to be 2.0 8V however the head is 100% off the 1.6 8V Sport.

by head do you mean inlet manifold?
