hi i am going to seal my inner door panel which has just started to leak i have read the guide and i am looking on ebay for this butyl tape i have found 8mm x 8mm round will this be ok or to thick?(leaking on ancillery door carrirer panel near speaker)thanks

Anywhere between 5 and 9 should be fine, just squash it down a bit before you put the panel back on. You're looking for it to compress and 'ooze' to get the good seal.

What Slimy said :) It's a non-setting thixotropic compound, meaning it gets runny when shaken up and fills any gaps created by expansion or moving around of the metal door parts. So you should expect it to squash down and ooze out of the join. Get all of the old tape residue out of the joint first.

Wow thats a technical answer cheers i would like to take the panel off completly so i can fix the butyl on but might as well try it just loosening the bolts off first and feeding it in that way be alot quicker

It's just as good to do it that way, but it's not as easy to clean the old stuff off. Since mine had been 'fixed' with sealant so many times I had to take the panel off to get rid of the old sealant. I'd have much preferred to just loosen the panel!

When I did it, I found I could get away with removing all the bolts except the top ones, which were just loosened off a fair way. That let me swing the ancilliaries carrier away from the door far enough to get a lolly-stick-type scraper in there to get all the old self-adhesive remnants out of the bottom and sides of the join. Most of the old tape just fell out, but it was still stuck in places.

Not having to take the glass out was a major advantage, both in terms of the speed of doing the job and the complexity of it.

There's really not a lot of advantage in sealing the top edge of the carrier as there's no way that water is getting in at that point and if the door fills up that far it's going to leak out of the speakers first!
