Think it was because of my age - 19 and that i have 0 no claims and the engine of the car. But 1900 fron tesco isn't too bad fully comp or 1600 tptf? think it was £170 a month or so.

Go fully comp.

Clone,

Try Elephant, thats who my PD130 is insured with and I also have a KA postcode so your quote might be better with them also.

At the time I had 0NCB, Two fault claims and an SP30 and that was £1200 Fully Comp - I was 22 at the time.

Would have recommended Elephant but they don't cater for monthly payments (where you split the cost over 10 months or whateva) - you have to pay the Premium up-front as a single payment, as soon as you take out the policy! So paying upfront £1500+ could be costly.

Haw about trying these Insurance companies (cater for younger drivers/modified rides)...

Adrian Flux - 08700 777888

Performance Direct - 01708 716000

Sky Insurance - 08701 121759

Declare an illegal act in a public forum for your insurance company to find on your/mother's first claim ... humm :(

.. I would say spending a little more on insurance and a little less on the car would be the sensible move... and you will gain NCB so you can get a better car in the future. NCB is a pain but you need it to make nice cars affordable. I get my slippers and pipe :)....

I do see what you are saying about the no claims etc but it's an extra £900 i could afford it i guess but would prefer not to lol if you know what i mean. I didn't know it was illegal though please tell me more. I take it you mean insuring under parents name then you (me) doing most of the driving? Would the insurance still be valid?

When I started driving mate, I was the only one with my car insurance in my own name. All my friends insured themselves under one of their parents names on their own cars.

I don't think what you are doing is a problem, loads of people do it.

Yep, it's illegal to insure the car in your mum or dad's name if you were going to be the biggest user of the car. Loads of people do that because it saves money at the time, but IMO it's worth paying the extra now to have it in your own name because you'll build up NCB quicker (which means your insurance will get cheaper more quickly or you can upgrade to a quicker/more powerful car sooner!). If you were to have a crash driving a car insured under your mum's name, if the insurance company could prove you're the main driver then they would probably refuse to pay out...

I drove my parents cars as a named driver on their insurance until I turned 22 (long time ago now ) - but never drove often enough to be classed as a main driver - and I suffered as a result when it came to getting my own car: I could afford a decent car but still got hammered for insurance as I had 0 years NCB, despite being 22.

CHR15B - just 'cos loads of people do it doesn't mean it's right ;)

I see. It's £900 more to go on my name... Do you mind if i ask what kinda quotes you get a 22 with 0 no claims and on what car? Just to see what i would be looking at if i stayed on my parents name.

I pay £400 on my 130 Tdi Sport, 23, 4 or 5 years (can't remember) NCB's.

Always had my own policy, started off with a Ford KA (don't laugh - it was cool) and that was £1500 a year fully comp with my dad as a named driver and a pass plus on the insurance stuff, these two dropped my premium by £400.

Only reason why I didnt insure my car under the old mans name is because its ilegal. Nothing wrong with having your parents as named drivers to lower premiums though. ;)

Christ, I'll be 29 in two weeks, don't know if I can remember back 7 years .

Think the first car I insured (in 2001 at 22 with 0ncb) was a Fiat Punto Sporting 1.2 16v (group 7, same as a VTR) and it cost around £600. Compare that with the Clio 172 (gp16) I got in April 2004 (25 3yrs ncb, 3pts) and paid £580. Now I'm 28 with 5 years protected at last renewal and got quotes of £340 for my Cupra TDI (also gp 16).

You'll get hit regardless for the first couple of years, but once you've got a few years ncb premiums do go down. Hence why it's best to do it sooner rather than later if you're a car nut...

Agree, good way of doing things and totally legal. Adding my GF/wife as named driver saved me a fair amount
