Hi all

I'm looking to purchase a mk2 cupra which is on 58 plate and has 47k on the clock with 2 owners . It has full service history . Is there anything I should look out for. I have heard that cam shaft followers are prone premature wear but this was not an issue on 08 plates ? Is there anything else I should check . Any help would be great and will be sad to leave my good old mk4 golf 1.8t

The cam follower is an issue on all the Leon's, they need to be checked and maybe replaced around every 10k - 20k, dependent upon how much power you're running. Overall they are pretty solid cars, just check that the clutch isn't shagged if they've mapped it and then put it back to stock for a sale, and also check the PCV valves and DV's if it has a rough idle as they're prone to breaking!

Should have had cambelt done by now so make sure it's been done?

Josh pretty much covered everything else

Check the bolsters on the sides of the front seats for wear

Hi
Thanks all for the replies. Yeah hey will be changing the cam belt as I am of the understanding this should be done every 4 years or 40k . When I told the salesman he checked with seat across the road and they advised home the same ,so they have agreed to do it. I am buying from a Mercedes garage as it was a trade in. Reg plate is AE58 AEG. Is there any tell tale signs if cam shaft follower is bugged ie engine sound or the way the car drives

Sounds like a plan mate!!

I'd probs ask for an oil change too if you're feeling cheeky lol. Some of these TFSI's are proper thirsty mate, so having an oil change won't do any harm

Oh ok. Do you think the engines that dont drink oil dont have problems with cam shaft followers or is that a silly question

Check the car history today and couldn't find anything on the cam follower/tappet being changed . Called all the companies that serviced it and nothing . I know this is not on the service schedule but how often should these be changed as the car has 47k on clock. Gonna be looking at the car and test drive it is there a way if this has failed to tell by engine noise or how it drives??????

This was mine changed at £50k on an 08 K1. Minimal wear and I think think you'll be lucky to get it changed without having to pay as it's not a serviceable part.

changed my follower at 54k miles and there was nothing wrong with it, slight wear, but nothing major. mines an 07. for the cost of it, its worth replacing when you buy the car, then just check it every service.

Clutches / flywheels are common on all performance cars not just the Cupra.

Make sure they do the whole timing belt job properly. We all know how dealerships love to save money and cut corners. Just cause its a Merc garage means nowt.
Id be making sure they do the full belt kit, water pump with proper VAG coolant and the Aux belt. Basically anything that comes off, replace it.
The above alone will save you £400-£550

Ok cool thanks. Yeah i did request cambelt, tensioner and water pump to be changed . I also rang the seat garage that are doing the work and he confirmed thats what there doing on monday . Got merc to agree a service to be stamped in the book . ill hopefully be picking up on friday so a bit of a road trip . I know these are cars are 240bhp but is it tame in the way the power is delivered and is it worth getting remap as this has the sort of the same engine as the ed30/s3 and K04 turbo
