Booked in for cam belt, waterpump, aux drive belt on Thursday. Fitting my coilovers and ordering an ARB put back on the back burner!!

Good plan mate. Atleast you can look forwad to ordering the coilovers now without the worry of the engine exploding!:)

I've got the coilovers, kinda came with the car from the previous owner, who hadn't got round to fitting them. I've delayed it until warranty expired and plan to get them fitted when I've got an ARB. But as you say, I'll be safe in the knowledge that the cam belt shouldn't go bang!!

I changed mine on saturday, all VAG parts apart from aftermarket water pump with metal impeller, all in £100 bargin

Wish I had the skills to do that! Was it difficult?

Nah i've done loads of them and i've got the VAG timing tools and being a mechanic for 17 years helps, lol took a couple of hours but that included cleaning all the things i took off before i put them back.

Main dealer wouldn't do that

Mines 3 years old with 56k and the belt showed signs of cracking, so be warned ;)

Well, as your a mechanic, I dont feel so bad about my DIY skills;)

O/T but how do you remove the aux belt? I want to change the tensioner idler wheel, but cant work out how to take the tension off. As far as I can see the arm just rotates backwards, and it can then be locked off, is this the case?

Yeah u just move the 16mm bolt in the middle of the tensioner wheel, it quite tight, there is a locating hole you can line up and put a 4mm drill bit in to hold it in the un- tensioned position.

you cant buy just the wheel it comes complete about 30 quid fron VW

Thanks, so you use the 16mm bolt to lever the whole arm back, and then lock it off?

Yea part of the tensioner pivots back to take the tension off the belt, then you stick a special VAG tool (or simply a drill bit) through the hole and it holds it in place so you can remove the belt.

Had Cambelt changed today by Independent Garage. Picked car up, 200 yards later something went bang and all power lost-engine sounded awful - even for an oil burner;)So I headed back, turns out the Intercooler pipe had blown off under the pressure of the boost. So they clipped it back on, 100 yards later BANG! The mechanic thinks the gromets that hold the clip on the pipe have worn and no longer hold it. 8 cable ties later its on and working, but obviously this is a temp fix! Car has just gone past 60k so the warranty has expired:(
So is it worth me replacing with OEM parts or is there something else thats worth while fitting? To be honest I don't even know what it is I need:cry::help:

This happened to someone else on here a few months ago. The pipe is removed while doing the belt, then not put back on well enough so it keeps coming off. Once it's been off once it can be difficult to get it to stay on again!

They reckon its been rattling about and the metal lugs have worn down, so now there is no way it'll hold!? To be fair they tried for a while to sort it, prior to the cable ties!! Is there a silicone alternative?

not sure, maybe forge?? i think the OEM clips are use once only so should be replaced. which makes me think i should change mine. have you tried the old fashioned jubilee clips?
have you had a remap?

No remap-yet;)

I suggested a jubilee clip at the garage, but apparently as the piece is solid plastic it wouldn't work. Its not the retainer clip thats the problem (apparently) but the metal lug on the pipe that the clip 'clips' on to?

Its a common problem with these cars. The only proper fix is to get a new pipe, which I dont think are too expensive. Id try to get the garage to fix it though, as the car was fine when it went in. Sounds like they broke it / havent put it back corectley.

When started reading your post I thought the belt had slipped - Glad its only the boost pipe!

Thankfully No, I took your advice nick and replaced it. Thinking of getting a silicone pipe - if they do 1:confused:
