I have the standard alloys on a 55 plate Leon TDI 150 FR and the fronts are looking a bit of a mess as they have gone a bit yellow in places and the brake dust won't come off with soap and water.
I got a Car Care wonder wheels cleaning kit, but I'm not sure if its going to damage the alloys.
Has anyone tried this kit? If so what results did you get?

After using the kit I noticed it was called carplan not carcare. I was very cautious at first and only left the stuff on for about 30 seconds, but in the end I brushed it onto the whole wheel before washing it off.
I'm pleased with the results as before there was some yellowing in the corners of the rims and the brake dust was ingrained. I did the front wheels as the back still looked tidy, but now the backs look abit untidy compared to the front. The fronts are far from perfect on close inspection, but look fine from a distance.
I will try and post some before and after pics when I do the back rims.

I used wheel cleaner from A-Glaze who are supposed to be a tip top brand used on prestige cars. I used to work for Daimler Chrysler/Mercedes Benz through college so got the kit cheap. I diluted as directed and it stripped paint from the wheel :(.

I can't comment on Wonder Wheels but be careful!

Try posting this up in the Car Care & Detailing Section, i'm sure the detailers on here will be able to help you.

it should be fine, just dont leave it on to long. by far the best i have found though is bilbury wheel cleaner...does an amazing job and doesnt damage any wheel type.

cheers

I used to get the Polish guys to clean my car in the winter when its cold (yeh I'm a wimp) and they used to spray that stuff on bumpers and wheels. I think it's what caused lacquer peel on my bumper, wheels and calipers.

From now on I'm only ever cleaning by hand with the non-volatile stuff. When I get my car back I'm gonna be clay-baring and waxing this weekend and see how that goes! Never waxed before - but done quite a lot of polishing.

Yeah I'd always used polish (Mer) before - brings the shine up nicely but of course doesn't really seal it.

I've got some Halfords vouchers so I'm limiting my choice to what they have. I'm thinking of the Halford clay bar kit (bar and lube - £20) and the expensive Autoglym canuaba wax kit (£40). They don't seem to have any other proper waxes (I don't want shines, spray, sealants etc - just a proper wax).

Btw, back off-topic again - anyone clayed their car before? Is it possible to clay absolutely all areas on your car?

I intend to wash the car (two-bucket method) with standard wash n' wax stuff. (Sometimes I put polish in the bucket but not this time as polishing too often will thin my paint down).

Then I'm hoping to clay the whole car (all paint, plastic, glass, wheels, etc.) and use canuaba wax on all surfaces except glass and plastic.

Then to finish off polish the windows for good rain beading.

Well, that's the plan anyway...

My windows/headlights/paint was clay bared, brings the headlights up amazing, makes them brighter too.

Claying is ok on all areas, just make sure you keep it well lubricated with the supplied spray, the carnuba wax is good stuff, but you should use it to seal in a deep shine after a good few layers of polish, i'd recommend the megs NXT 2.0 its what ive been using recently and its very easy to work with and unlike Autoglym SRP it dosnt dust up on removal.

Cool. Be interesting to see how mine turn out.

Just a little rant - but does anybody else think the polish/wax market is a bit muddled up? There are so many products that are badly marketed such as polishes sold as waxes and vice-versa. Polish and wax are both meant for different purposes and results.

i completly agree, so many miss branded products and so much s**t :ban: out there.
It is best to stick to the good stuff when it comes to waxes as some "yellow" after a while.

i am currently also using NXT 2.0 and it is very good. you probably wont think so at first but 2/3 coats in....it gives an amazing deep shine.

and yeah, clay everything....take your time though or you will be disapointed as quickly rubbing the clay bar over the car will make little or no difference.

my favourite thing at the moment is chemical guys wheel sealer....OMG what a shine and the brake dust just doesnt settle so wheels clean in seconds

cheers
