Changing gear stick gaiter

Has anyone changed their gear stick gaiter before? i bought on there to replace my one thats splitting a bit, altho it said on advert that only the leather part was supplied

So how do i remove the knob (twist, pull?), and the frame at the bottom seems to have clips but i tried it and couldnt get them off

Release the attachment frame (1), by pressing the fixing clips in the direction of the arrows, using a trim removal lever and lift the frame upwards from the rear.

Lift the frame upwards and remove it from the grooves at the front.

Break the fastening clip -1-.
Remove the dust guard with the knob and the attachment frame turning in the direction of the arrow.

fitted and all, only thing i can say is that the clip to hold the gearknob on is a balls to take off without bending (i just replaced it with a jubilee clip)

and lining up the gaitor was a bit harder due to the leather being thicker than the original one

Is it possible to remove the gear gaiter and knob together without breaking the clip? So just take the whole lot off?

cant remember dude, i actually broke the clip then drove to a garage and picked up one similar sized.... was def a small one, like half inch diameter

went to fit mine tonight but its a bit dark and looks like a bit of a ball ache - will get a jubilee clip anyways as im sure something else is bound to break - already cracked the silver surround but luckily it was the back

I got a new one and went to fit it today but can't even get the damn thing off. Slightly confused as to how it should all come apart. Does the chrome surround lift up separately?

To get the gaitor out I pulled the old leather thing up (Quite) hard, its held on by staples so doesnt take much to get it out, once you pull it off the rest is self-explanatory, not a quick mod so make sure you have a couple of hours!

The gaiter and silver surround are connectedin the same way the silver bit on the grill is to the front grill. Just loads of tiny clips. It's brittle tho so be careful. To get the gaitor up just need to feel around the gaitor as there are a few clips think there's 4. Once you get the gaitor up just remove the clips change the knob then put all the clips back on. the big fat black clip right at the top usually breaks when you unclip it but if your careful you can reuse it. Then put all back in and your done.

This is what the chrome surround looks like from underneath.



Once you get this off, pull out the cup holder. You can then get your hand inside and underneath the gaiter to feel how the plastic clips work. It's a tight fit but I think in the end I had one hand underneath, and the with the other I just squeezed the whole of one side of the gaiter in (I put pressure on the plastic either side of the tang thing) just enough such that the tang cleared the lip of the centre console. At this point all tension is relieved so it's then easy to remove upwards.

Whatever you do, do not pull on the leather gaiter itself - the staples will just rip it.

My gaiter is still loose (not got round to re-setting the gear linkage yet) - if you don't manage to remove yours, I can take a few pics of mine this weekend if that'll help.
