ciggy lighter positioning

Have any of you got a portable satnav device in your car such as a tomtom?


I have two problems

1- The angle of the windscreen and dash size means when i attatch the satnav to the window its either to far away from me, or too high up on the windscreen

2- The ciggy lighter is right next to the handbreak in the middle. its a pain to stretch a power cable from there, past the gear leaver, up the dash and to the device.


Do any of you have this problem? how do you overcome it?

My tomtom is in the drinks holder at the front by the hazard light. Not ideal but then i have the sound up so i can hear where to go. I have some velcro strips on it to stop it flying all over. Not ideal but i get by

No more trailing wires

seen these micro fuzions the other day, are they any good, do you have to suscribe? there are loads of mobile vans out my way so i want to detect them.

I have recemtly bought a Tom Tom and had the problem. However after a little bit of playing around I have found that tucking the wire down the side of the drivers seat and running up the side of the instrument binnacle it does not seem to cause a problem with the handbrake or pedals, at least with my driving position. In terms of locating the device I have it positioned just to the left of the instrument binnacle. It does require a slight lean forward if I need to reset or use bluetooth function but positioned here it means I can keep my eyes straight ahead and still see the display in the peripheral vision.

Provided it is fully charged when I set off I have found that even on long journeys it seems to last without the need for the charger anyway. Hope you find a solution.

Slightly off thread but has anyone found a good site to download fun voices. To Tom themselves don't seem to have much and most of the sites turned up by a Google search are pretty poor?

The wireless one is a radar/laser detector
it is not a GPS unit
so there is no need for any annual subscribsion

I have bought a longer usb cable which plugs in to my rear lighter socket. The wire is hidden under the center binacle (it holds in place) under the dash (hidden and taped on for safety) then up the door seal on the car (also hodden) and pops out at the dash with about 5 inches on show. Stays there hapily without being in the way or noticed too much!

I have a USA portable "silver bullit" battery or 12v lead this spots forward lazer overhead lazer choppers etc. given me many false alarms but [also picks up traffice light sensors too £60.00 on Ebay I have a seperate gps system and don't need satnav for most of my travels.

I'm dragging up an old thread here I'm afraid, as I am finding the positioning of the ciggy lighter outlet absolutely useless! I use a sat nav occasionally and the plug sticks out so high it gets in the way of my arm and the wire trails irritatingly down the centre of the car where I position it on the windscreen. Has anyone got any clever ways to avoid this? Can the power outlet be moved? Or maybe an extension put in with the outlet under the glove box or something? It really drives me mad! The person that designed the whole of the centre console must have been blind!

I could start ranting about the fact that not one of the 3 drinks holders provided is any good for holding drinks, but I'll keep that one back...for now!

I have a TomTom Classic (original & a bit big & bulky) which sits fine at the bottom right of the screen & I can reach it ok although I try not to when I am driving. The power plug doesn't get in my way either. The cable doesn't bug me either really. Am I the odd one out?

You're right the position is useless.

I have borrowed a Tom Tom One a couple of time and put it in the coin tray just in front (towards the front of the car) of the cupholder.

Mine is hardwired - was fairly easy to do actually, and well worth the money.

Cable isn't hidden. It runs from the power outlet up to the left of the steering wheel across the cowling & up over the dash to the rear of the TomTom (bottom right of screen). It doesn't seem to get in the way & I don't notice the cable when I'm driving. My TomTom Classic screen fixing bracket is much more robust than the newer flimsy sort my son has. I think it holds the unit further away from the glass.

Sorry, I didnt make my comment clear.

My Tom Tom has been hard-wired, namely the cabling is all set in, and I still have use of the ciggy lighter. The USB-mini cable pops up by the drivers wing-mirror and I just affix my Tom Tom and mounting bracket.
