There are a few threads about this issue, which appears to be quite a common fault, but apparently nobody has managed to fix it on the dash itself, just bought a replacement.

Given the nature of the fault(s) it shouldn't be that hard to fix, with a circuit diagram.

On mine, sometime I lose the fuel gauge, and nothing else. Whilst the fuel gage is gone, the low outside temperature beep actually works, otherwise it doesn't.

When the fuel gauge is gone, more often than not the outside temperature display on both dash and climate computer are also gone (---).

For the first time, yesterday, I also lost the voltmeter, oil temp and water temp gauges too.

Banging the dash got the volt and (both) temp gauges back, which indicates a connection issue, rather than a component failure.

ECU logs a pending issue of a short between the fuel sender (or gauge, I can't remember the terminology) and battery positive.

This should be a really simple issue to fix, either a dodgy track on the instrument cluster PCB, or perhaps a component breakdown due to age.

A new dash is around ~£300, then there's all the reprogramming as I understand it does the immobiliser too, (can anybody PM me how to get my immobiliser key out of the ECU?) so its not a cheap job.

If anybody has a circuit diagram, please let me know.

Also, if anybody can confirm that simply removing the instrument cluster will not require it to be reprogrammed (for the immobiliser) that would be appreciated. I don't want to take it out, only to find when I put it back I can't start the car!

Thanks
Chris

MY brother had the exact same faults as yours,

we removed it and refitted it 2 or 3 times "with the battery disconnected" and had no problems

I have no diagrams but I went round all of the cluster with my soldering iron and made 100% sure there were no dry joints and I even tinned the pins in the main plugs/sockets and continuity across all of the plugs/sockets (even the little ones for the volts, oil, fuel and temp gages)

I could not fix it and we gave up and he bought a new cluster :(

the new cluster did fix the problem BTW

There is a 32-pin connector on the back on the right-hand side as you look at ti from the front. So it could just be loose as it connects to all the guages that you mention. Next time the gauges go, try banging each side of the cluster to see which side fixes it...if you get what I mean.

It has to be such a simple fix :headhurt:

I'll take a look next weekend, concentrating on the fuel gauge wiring as thats the one which the ECU is logging.

Thanks

I also have this problem and read on another forum that is sometimes related to a connector in the footwell. I would have thought this came from the tank sender (also on the drivers side).

I have had the brake switch replaced recently so it could have been dislodged when this was done.

Perhaps some contact cleaner or silicone grease as used on the MAF sensor plug could be of use here too.

I am yet to get into the car and sort this out but will keep you posted.

A circuit diagram would be extemely usefull though

Whilst it has been mentioned of a possible fix, due to a connector in the footwell, I've not seen a post where this has been confirmed, or mentioned other than from a 3rd party.

Replacing the instrument cluster has fixed it in every case. :(

Bu**er!!

Will be getting one from the scrappy and doing it myself then.

The dealer can repreogram it but i'm not paying their silly labour rates to take the damn dash apart [:@]
