Clio 172 Vs Leon Cupra TDI

Stupid is, as stupid does
Just thought Id report my recent findings after testing a friend.

Cars:
51 Reg Clio 172 Sport
Full Stainless with De-cat
Test remap (extra 5hp - long story)
BHP: 178

54 Reg Seat Cupra Tdi
Standard!

Off the mark wasn't tested, we were both at rolling speeds 20mph and he couldn't get away. The problem I found was our lass who was slowing me down. If I could have pushed her out of the door in motion, we'd be side by side upto a ton...

In 5th gear, It was becoming neck and neck at least at 115mph I felt the urge to change to 6th...

..Wrong Idea (but what other choice is there!). I take it 6th isn't exactly geared to be progressive and he starts to pull away. Steadily I'm catching up as he is topping out in 5th at 135 (or so the speedo reads) and I'm back again but can't get anything else out of her.

With the Clio screaming it still managed to pull a few yards before we called it a day.

But I was impressed. I'll admit i thought the weight factor of the diesel would have ended it before it started. Or just maybe he is sh^t at driving! Sorry Ben if you are reading this.

Oh, and don't try this in your cul de sac. We both are test drivers for Ferrari and it was conducted at the spanish test track in Jerez.

8.6 sec 0-60 leon top speed 134

off the line he would kill!!

I think i would beat a clio sport!

Clio owners response: but not round the twisties!

my response: wanna bet!

"diesel's are fun"

Partly correct...

"Turbo Diesel's with more than 100hp are fun"

You try driving our lasses 60hp Flat 1.9 pigut. You'll quickly warm to the statement.

The Ca-pow comment made me chuckle. When I ask for some torque all i can hear is "pssssssssshhhhhhhhhh"...

I did exactly that last night with a 1.8 Corsa SRI who tried to out drag me on a slip road off a motorway, then as we hit some lights, I hung back slightly, he slowed for the red light, lights went to green and I sooted him.

I still say after having an MR2 Roadster, Celica, ST170 and now the standard FR TDI, I love my sooty car, even more so now I use Shell Extra which seems to have got rid of the black soot and is more of a grey haze.

Skys the limit with these deisel engines guys....Mine has beaten 3 different civic type R's over a 1/4 mile(SantaPod) and just about to 60 too!! so Clio's wouldnt be a problem..........will pull past 140 mph in 6th too

its like the video of the type r against the chipped 130 ibiza, after 100mph the type r crept by the ibiza but then the ibiza caught up again and it was neck and neck top speed.
could you have not gone further than 115 in 5th? when i had a play with a 535d i stayed in 5th til 125 with no probs.

no prize for the 1.8SRi slaying.

When i had my TDi golf my brother had a full spec Corsa 1.8 Sri, it had the lot, lether, heated seats, cruise, climate, as he got it at cost through work ( cough 8k on the nosecough) anyway. we all wen up the pod, and he kept on about how fast it was, so i took him on. He got 16.4 and the big lardy assed golf Tdi got 16.004, best fun i ad in the company car ever.

When stoneyfordni took me out for a spin after he got custom code stage 2 done he hit 115 in 4th so i definately think that you could have done better in 5th imho.

Hmmm.... a standard Clio 172 or 182 will absolutely kill a standard whatever TDI. A remapped one, yes close, but still no way. I know, I have owned both.

Clio 182 = 1090 kg, 0-60 in 6.3 seconds, 30-70 in 5.8 seconds, 0-100 in 17 seconds.

Leon TDI PD150 = 1350 kg approx, 0-60 in 8 seconds, 30-70 in 7.5 seconds, 0-100 in about 23 seconds.

No chance!

And yes, it WILL win around the twisties as well.

I could have but stayed in there but i felt like the pull was dropping off so thought right to change. Looks like I should have stayed but the instinct was to shift. Twas only a test though, so after revo i could ask him to re-create the scenario and see if it all changes.

The 0-60 time shows that the clio 182 is quicker, but we weren't at a standing start. It didn't kill the Leon but it was the quickest. The impressiveness comes from a heavier car (our lass too) and Ben always slating oil burners for being slow. I'd like to think it was close and hopefully with revo shortly It would be even closer.

IMO the clio is scary on straights at high speeds never mind corners. When you hammer it, the steering might as well not exist. It goes that light that you spin the wheel a full 360 and it would make no difference to the direction of the car! at least thats how i feel when i drove it. I daren't take corners in the thing in case there is no traction what so ever! Ben gets on with his ok, so I must just be paranoid.

BTW A senator is better than a clio..... :ban:

Well it wouldnt totally kill it, to do that takes a hell of a lot of power in the real world. The diesels certainly arent slow, especially considering how heavy they are, but they are not quite up there with the petrol hot hatches until remapped (I'm talking like the fast ones not warm ones like the Fiesta ST).

I must admit, I havent had a problem with the Clio's handling particularly. On straights at 130 mph it seems fine to me, pretty planted considering the small size of it.

Corners.... I find it a somewhat strange car. I think it turns in very quick, and has very little body roll, however, somehow its not for the faint of heart either, it easily puts back wheels in the air round corners and it can be back endy, and has oversteered once unexpectedly for me. It is pretty kart like though, and is fun to drive (once you get used to it). My old vRS for all it didnt quite have the same handling, it was perhaps in some ways a little more safe handling.

However, neither handled as well as my old Mk2 Golf GTI - now that thing handled amazingly IMHO.

The legendary Mk2 Golf. Classic.
My brother had a mark 1, until it ended up coming through the pizza shop window after some joy riders ran up its ar$e.

So you're ok with your little rocket? Is it the later 172? by that i mean after a 51 reg is it? they had styling changes from the older ones? I've got no idea but i hear my best mate waffling on about it.
He had a metro gti before it and i've never been so scared in my life. Until i drove the clio! I could honestly visualise me dying in that thing the way he drives it, on a bend...........
