Clio 172 Vs Leon Cupra TDI

My definition of fast is point to point speed, even with something that handles well you cant hoon around public places and around busy roundabouts at break next speeds so in real world terms FAST is point to point and torque as far as im concerned, and when incorporating this theory into my car choice there was a clear winner, im totally hooked and can't really see any benifit from going back to a petrol hot hatch apart from the fact that they sound much better!! lol

Not half! I miss that loads, but I'd still have my TDI over a petrol hatch. Plus you can soot cars behind with a petrol. I really gave the guy behind a reason for having his fog lights on today!!! His expression at the lights was remarkably like

I had a bit of a duel with a guy from work he had a 182 Clio My leon was slower off the mark but when I spotted a cheeky overtake past him and a lorry on an uphill section he had dropped out of the rev's and I took advantage of my torque he was never able to get back in front. Next day at work his comments were it goes well for a diesel. I'm happy with it but only average around 38 mpg but if it were a petrol then it would be low 20's

As i said it all depends what you want from a car..I don't tune or tinker with mine...i am very happy with the leon...but the clio was much quicker point to point. It did 0-60 in 6.1 secs with no mods...

VW/Seat/Audis all have far too much understeer for my liking, but i am willing to put up with it for all the other benefits i get

To the guy who did 14.7 in a remapped Cupra TDI... a standard 182 is capable of getting into the 14's with the right driver, so its not that much quicker!

At the end of the day, I'd rather have any petrol hot hatch than a diesel as they sound much nicer and usually handle better, and are much more fun to drive.

Define quicker? 0-60? Mid range? Top end? If the cupra can get 14.7 and its forte' is not 0-60 times, you'd expect the mid -range to be pretty impressive?
I dont think ive ever really booted a car of mine from a standing start, well maybe my 750 panda.

good point because you dont do 1/4 mile races on the road, what interests me more is open road and overtaking driving.

In otherwords if a clio beats a tuned TDI on the pod i would bet it wont pull away from a TDI on open road foot to the floor and overtaking driving, there will be no difference.

A standard RS clio will eat for breakfast and spit out any std Tdi. There would be no contest.

If you mod the tdi then it could probably match the straight line speed of an RS clio...but it would have no chance round the corners....

I have owned both cars in question...and there is no way the tdi would be quicker point to point than the clio.

I have always found the chassis's on the Ibiza/Leon/Golf to be pretty poor. Apart from the new golf GTI which, at last seems to have been sorted. If only my leon was based on that chassis and not the terrible MK4 one..

The 30-70 time of the Clio 182 was tested by Autocar as 5.8 seconds.

As long as one is prepared to actually use the gearbox (yes probably a foreign concept to some TDI drivers) then the "mid range" is actually very good.

As standard they look pretty similar to me. Cant see how the clio would spit out any TDI. Just my 10p's worth. All ive ever said is the clio wouldnt 'kill' all TDI's. Whether re-mapped or not.

Hmmm.... a standard Clio 172 or 182 will absolutely kill a standard whatever TDI. A remapped one, yes close, but still no way. I know, I have owned both.

Is an Ibiza cupra TDI not a TDI?

All this is pointless, 9 times out of 10 you will beat a quicker car for the following two reasons

a) The other driver has no talent
b) The other driver is not pushing it

I killed a boxster s in a ST170, mainly because I booted it before he had a chance to know I was racing him.

I also killed a Clio Cup because the sweet heart driving didnt know how to push it.

How many cup drivers bought it for the power, I see no end of them around and not being pushed. The same for most porka drivers. Oh, I bought by TDI for fuel ecc, but I push it all the time, otherwise I would have bought a small slow deisel.

Agreed I bought mine for economy, and because I had a new born! It just so turns out its very quick, well built, superb quality and holds it value better than most cars!

Really happy with my purchase!!

I think this is the important thing to remember I've kept with Scoobies and other racing cars in my car with just 65hp.
The Clio is a very fun car there are some fast ones out there they have a great chassic for track and back roads work I've yet to drive a Fabis but if its anything like the Ibiza i test drove then the Clio will easily beat it equal driver for equal driver on tracl. The diesel does help massivly on track pulling out of bends though.
