clutch pedal!!

hello!

the other day i was going for a drive with my gf and the clutch pedal broke when i was changing gear. some bits fell into the footwell and the pedal went straight to the floor and stopped operating the clutch. the aa bloke who came out bodged it with a bolt so car is still drivable altho makes a lot of dodgy sounds and isnt too nice to drive. the clip broke and apparently is a common fault. i was wondering how much the pedal costs and how easy is it to change them over? i dont think any welding has to be done.

There is a weakness in the construction of the sheet-metal pedal, the box that holds the clip in is spot-welded and the weld fails, allowing the clip to fall out and the master-cylinder pushrod to pop out to its fullest extension. When this happened to me, it was enough to cause the seal to fail and hydraulic fluid started leaking out into the footwell.

The biggest problem is getting the pedal off. It shares a pivot bar with the brake pedal, and there's some hefty springs involved and not a lot of room to work in.

Not sure why it's making dodgy sounds though.

the aa guy put a bolt in the clips place or something and the noises are from the clutch cable when the pedal moves because the cable has some play in it now. the pedal has a lot more movement in it now which makes it a pain in the ass to drive. will it need welding? or can it just be a case of swapping the broken bits over depending where its broke? it broke right before christmas and the seat garage wont do anything til next week cos of christmas. thanks

Is your clutch a cable-operated one or a hydraulic one? Mine was hydraulic.

The easiest answer is to put in a new pedal, which is what I had to do. The broken one had to come out anyway and I needed the car driveable straight away, so I had no choice. In my case the spot-welded end of the box holding the clip in had broken away, so it could have been repaired only by welding.

In your case, if you have a cable clutch and the clip has broken, then a new clip should do the job without any welding. In either case it is a dealer part, unless you have an independant spares dealer locally.

I don't know of a Leon with a cable clutch, but I'm by no means an expert on the whole range.

im not sure in behind the pedal it looks like a cable with a ball on the end. only had a quick look tho. i have got a 2000 x reg sport. the older cupras may have a different clutch setup or something. ill just have to wait til the garage opens and see if the bits fit and work! i havent got a welder so im buggered if does need a weld done. cheers

i wonder if this is whats happened to mine. i was giving it some beans and the pedal stuck to the floor. since then it doesnt feel "right" and its very hard to select the gears...

any other suggestions?

i dont think it would be. when mine went half the dashboard had to be taken off and pedal was bodged to get it working til new pedal arrived. a weld broke so the hydrolic rod went straight through the pedal so pedal wouldnt operate it. could be another part in engine bay getting stiff or something?

clutch let go

my clutch pedal dropped to the floor last weekend,the pedal spot weld had given up,the black plastic retaining clip had broken too,got all sorted now but only had car for a month and had the cluch break and the passenger side window too which i had just fixed on the day of the clutch pedal breaking

Its a proper ball ache to change the pedal. Done 2 at work on octavias and was hoping the Leon would be different. Another reason to get rid of my LC I think. But cant think of anything to replace it with apart from a corolla t sport

The two octavias i done, and my golf ( i forgot) were all "older" cars around v,x and w plated. I wonder if the newer say "facelift" leons had the modified clutch pedal as the spot weldsa look bigger on the new pedal.
