have'nt you looked at the engine mounts as i had suggested? The engine will still be moved about even if not being used when rolling down the road. My car had literally everything replaced that could have been worn out suspension wise on my old mk4 then they finally out of the off chance changed the engine mount and that was what was causing the noise.

i have just come in from doing just that funnily enough lol. i inspected them & cant see any damage to any of them. rocked the living daylights out of the engine as hard as i could & no noise came from that. even had the battery out to check the gearbox mount under there as thats the side the noise comes from & its like brand new. been under the car, everythings tight & all bushes that havent been replaced still look to be new & theres no play in anything. whatever it is i can make it do the noise if i hald the clutch at biting point with no gas & the handbrake on but got our lass to do it while i had a look & theres nothing to be seen. im just hoping its not the gearbox on its way out as they aint cheap. i cant see it being that though as it will still do it when its just coasting out of gear & not running

my engine mount made no noise when rocking the engine, they just replaced it as a process of elimination and low and behold that was what was causing it. Don't think they are that expensive, i saw the invoice for the warranty card thingy and i'm sure it said £18 for the mount.

ive got a similar noise coming from the front left of my polo gt, i had mine serviced a while ago and told them to inspect the noise, they came out with the top strut bearing, being lowered on coilovers am surprised everything else hasnt rattled to bits. apparently i need to take the shocks and spring off to get to it

You will if its the top mount/bearing.

I have a similar squeaking/rubbing/knocking noise coming from the back right, Was driving down the motorway and heard an almighty crash and the noise went, it's now back intermittently.

I'm getting fed up of the noises coming from my DAB Ibiza and considering selling it. I test drove a DC2 integra and was disappointed by it so I'll have to think of something else. I know suspension and bushes are considered wear items but 28k is a joke.

really? never seen a top mount go on a polo, fabia or ibiza unless the springs collapsed.

more than likely:

the roll bar
roll bar bushes
roll bar drop links
broken spring
mis-aligned subframe causing the track rod arm the catch the anti roll bar

the mk4s are littered with poorly designed components that cause knocking on the front suspension.

Well I had to replace top mounts this year on my 65k 05 Cupra; corrosion got to one side to the point that it stopped working and the spring would "twang" as it twisted on the strut at parking speeds. It did this for about 4-5 mths before I fixed it .. but if you were cloth eared I guess it would eventually break the spring.

That's a knackered bearing, not the top mount

its looking like its the diff bearing guys. i can make it rattle by holding the clutch at biteing point. i wont f**k about with it if it is that, ill just sling a new gearbox in it but it will be coming off the road for a proper inspection after gti international. (providing it makes it home lol)

well... today i finally gave in & took it somewhere about the racket it makes. it turns out it was incorrectly fitted brake pads. ( both inner pads on one side & both outer pads on the other so they rattled about in the calipers over bumps & shut up when braking) & also the o/s front wheel bearing had decided to part company with the hub housing. basically the caliper was pretty much holding the wheel on.:wtf: i never noticed that one as i never bothered to look on that side as the noise was from the n/s

before you go and spend money on top mounts, i would check the engine mount on the left side of the engine bay (near the coolant), this failed on mine and caused a knocking sound. To check this, simply give the mount a good wiggle side to side, up and down. If a slight knock can be heard, chances are it needs to be replaced.

I'm replacing that mount tomorrow. Found out the other day the bolt had sheared off. The engine moves a good 6 inches backwards and forwards. Not good!
