Coolant warning light check manual

Hi all had this flash up a few minutes ago on my way into work.
Why does it say check manual. Could this mean something else other than my coolant is low?

No, it just means it can't possibly tell you all the safety precautions you need to take around hot coolant fluid using a tiny dash display so check the manual for all the info and warnings.

Fair enough. I'm pretty sure I have a leak. The coolant was lower than it should be and even lower when I went to get some coolant earlier. Now having driven to work again the coolant is too low again. Not quite low enough to set off the warning but still to low. I will top up again before going home. Then I suppose i will need to find someone to look for what is causing it.

Water pump and thermostat housing are a weak point on many VAG engines.

Had the same on my 2018 FR 1.4TSi (150). Solved by fitting a new water pump under warranty.

Wow you think it could be the water pump already. It's a 17 plate and is nearing 26k miles. So no warranty jobs for me.

My 2018 Leon 1.4TSi was less than 18 months old & 16k miles when the water pump leaked & was replaced under warranty.

Well it hadn't gone down overnight when I checked earlier. it only seems to go down when I'm driving. So I don't know if that has any bearing on what the issue is. i have it booked in with a mechanic that has done odd jobs and regular servicing for years to look at it. I let him know about the potential weakness of the water pump. Hopefully it's nothing very expensive.

Your car’s unlikely to lose coolant when it’s not been used and the engine’s cold - it’ll happen when the engine’s up to temperature and the coolant is also hot and under pressure.

Have you noticed any signs of coolant leaks in the engine compartment or that distinctive smell of coolant when the engine’s hot?

99.99% it’ll be this.
Check underneath the coolant bottle on left hand side of engine, it’ll probably have signs of leakage somewhere there

Turns out it was the water pump as suggested. My mechanic took the car today and found that was the issue. He has got hold of another one and hopefully I will have the car back tomorrow.
No idea on how much a water pump for a 2017 1.4 tsi act 150 is?

All sorted. Cost me £280 for a new belt, water pump and labour.

That's a good price. Dealers charge £500 for that job although you do get a five-year warranty.

When it comes to timing belt time unfortunately he is not willing to touch those anymore. He's done them in the past for me but with modern cars he's not so willing. He's only a few years from retiring so doesn't want any hassle I suppose. I will be looking at VAG specialists when that time comes. I have 2 within reasonable distance. One of which did my dad's Octavia 2.0 TDI a few years back. Although I understand the advantages of the dealer doing it, I just don't like them.

On some models isn’t the water pump on the other end of the engine and not driven by the timing belt but a belt purely for the water pump? Or am I confusing car forums.
Spoke to a couple of non Seat workshops re timing belt change, seems non oe timing tools are not up to the purpose and so these guys don’t want the job.

From what I was told my water pump was on the other side to the timing belt.

Hi everyone,

I had the low coolant warning appear on my way home from work today. I pulled in and checked, the level was just below the minimum line.
Strange thing was when I carefully unscrewed the cap, you could hear air rushing in/out and the coolant level then filled back up to the max line.
Ive checked it again when I arrived home after around 50 miles, it had dipped down again, but not as much. I again opened the cap, a smaller amount of hissing noise and the level returned to normal.
Car is a 20 plate Cupra in warranty, so I’ll give the dealer a call tomorrow but just thought I’d ask if anyone had come across this one before.
