Cooling Malfunction

Help. leon cupra20v 1.8t (180) my engine light has come on and in the book it says its something to do with emmissions.. (B*ll*cks). the code it came out with 17704 P1296 malfunction with cooling system. Fair enough it says this but where do i start looking for my fault?
