What do people think about this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1999-SEAT-IBI...ryZ18270QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I've been looking for a gti of some variety for the whole summer and didnt find one that came upto scratch (i.e. not much work needed as i'm at uni).
After nothing making the grade I thought I might as well see if anyone else can see anything wrong with this one before I spend more of my buget on petrol to go and look at one.
Cheers
Ollie

states power at *150* assume thats bhp? yet it has 8v clocks/int and rims..
also mileage says little over 64K .. would certainly be checking if belt has been done.. always easy to make a car look good with a couple of small pics and a decent write up ..

Yeah, im sure its an 8v - same reasons as you've said - assuming the guy hasn't got a clue about them.

Have sent a message asking about service, picture of the engine and rear arches. Ive seen pics and been told immaculate only to turn up and it be in worse condition that my shiney little 1.4.
Makes me sad - all I want is a gti (its not like i want a ferrari or anything)
Anyway think I saw you on the Aston express way the other week. Yours is sabrina green standard 8v isnt it?

Not really sure, about 10 days ago i think (its been a busy week so i've lost track really). I was in a red 1.4 (though not with the wheels pictured).
Any meets near us in the not too distant future?
What you think the black one is worth?

Balls can't go tomorrow, the gf is coming down to uni.
Suppose you are rite. Thinking that if it doesnt sell and the arches and service checks out i'll offer something.
Just getting so fed up of looking at them when they are in such naff condition.
Are there any left in the world that are in good nick and cheap?

last time i remember being on the expressway was on the way to Ed38 and that was about five weeks or so ago.. (on a sat gonig ,sun coming back)..
as for decent ones, I only buy 'repairables as projects ;)

If I needed a good runabout car, for a grand I'd definintely be thinking seriously about that.

I'd be making sure the exhaust doesn't rattle from a cold start and what the service history was like as mentioned, the timing belt and tensioner etc. May reflect the cost. I was going to service mine soon with that work done, similar mileage, completely standard and look for nearer 2k, haven't decided.

Just to let you know, if you do bid on this car don't expect to get the 45MPG the guy states. If you drive normally you'll get about 35MPG so i don't know where he got that from. And as he said it was 150 BHP, and it's really 115 BHP, i'm assuming he's not being completly honest about everything. Make sure it has a full service history, or at least some history stating the millage otherwise there's a high possibility it's been 'clocked.'

Also, he's admitted it's only 115 BHP but hasn't changed it in the main add. This tells me he's not very trustworthy and is hoping no one notices the question at the bottom of the page. Or he could have made a simple mistake. If so why hasn't he corrected it?

Your best bet would be to go and view the car before you bid. And try and take someone who knows a bit about cars. It might be a pain in the arse but it's better than buying it and finding out it's been ragged to near the end of it's life...

Oh yeah dont worry about that mate. If I do go and see this one it will be the seventh one I've looked at.
Annoyes me when people say "immaculate" or "as new" only to find its not and them to be amazed when looking round my current 1.4!
If it doesnt have a service then I wont bother with it, like I said before im at uni and cant be waiting around with a car on and off the road.

its not a mk2 gti engine either, its a 2.0 8v from a mk3 golf

guy cant make up a good advert, if he had i'd say he would have had a few bids by now.
seen plenty of ibizas with 100k + miles go for more

he does say 'upto 45 mpg', and to be fair, on a motorway run, taking it steady, you can get 45 mpg. So in that sense, i think it's a fair comment. But certainly, average fuel economy will be nearer the 35mpg mark, mine does about 38 mpg on average.
