Best bit was thirsk to whitby, he couldn't keep up to the point where id parked and got fish and chips by the time he got there and then we put mpg up on the respective fuel computers... me 47 him 28 lol. Love my fr to bits
Oh and when it snowed I dragged him out of the massive incline that is his drive too!
I find it hard to believe that a 1.9tdi with 130 bhp/229 torques could keep ahead of a 2.5 litre with 192 bhp/181 torques. I love my FR tdi as well, but i would'nt say its a fast car, more a quick car.

Bimmer is at least 200kg heavier. And of course it would come down alot to the drivers skill.
Stripped out 325ti compact vs cupra
I would want 190 diesel horses rather than 190 petrol ones
Easy pickings at 5.30 onwards

Id take 190 petrol horses over diesel every day.
And I agree, a 325 would destroy a standard fr.
Granted on the a1 I was shat upon but the instant we hit hills, corners and anything other than a straight I was away. So much so that he now has a Leon 130 tdi not the bimmer

190 blown petrol horses?
Equal drivers then 325 on paper looks too much for an FR. But the real world, wet road, crap tyres on the bimmer... not so sure.
190 any petrol horses. Nasp, tb, charger, whatever.
Hp is hp. The rest is down to gearing, and petrol cars are geared better (generally)
I think you have a point there. I also think there's a lot of drivers who have powerful motors that haven't got a clue how to get the most out of their cars.Equal drivers then 325 on paper looks too much for an FR. But the real world, wet road, crap tyres on the bimmer... not so sure.
That's an interesting statement for sure...got me thinking about car's I've owned in the past and their gearbox ratios compared to my current Ibiza.Hp is hp. The rest is down to gearing, and petrol cars are geared better (generally)
The more torque a car has the easier it is to drive on the road quickly. High reving nasp engines are fun, but unless you are on your game with every gearchange you will quickly lose ground to a car that can be driven quite lazily, riding the torque as it were. Generally regarded as not being as fun to drive.
Yeh you'll lose ground if your Pottering about. But in a situation where your 'racing' another car, then horsepower and rev ranges will win.
I'm not saying I'd want a high revving nasp engine as a daily (although I've had plenty lol).
I'm saying on a spirited drive, I know which would be quicker.
Two nice examples - ek9 civic or cupra tdi. I've owned both and the civic is easily quicker and more fun to drive, but I got rid of it because you couldn't listen to the radio.
Everything has it's place but in general, petrols are still quicker than diesels.
It's getting closer though
185bhp from a 1.6 nasp, damn impressive.Had my Cupra TDI from new (57 plate) and have decided to keep it for at least another couple of years its so good. Nothing else out there catches my eye as far as the combination of performance, handling, braking, fun, and running costs go. Not too mention its quite practical dog wise etc.
I got my remapped (custom code) after it was 3 months old. Now clocked up 79600 miles. Original clutch, no signs of slipping or wear. Only issue i've had is the turbo had to be replaced around 64k (£680 supplied/fitted inc service) but mines not been the only one. Since fitting the new turbo car's been better than it was from new if i'm honest.
Taking it steady to work (22 miles) I quite easily see 60mpg on the display. If driven hard it rarely goes below 40mpg over the same distance. I owned a Civic Type R for 3 years, and an impreza STI for 6 years (alongside the Cupra) and for everyday driving the Cupra has been my favorite car!
PS..... My bike wins hands down though![]()
If you dont mind me asking, what happened to your turbo?
I've owned my Cupra for about 4months now, love it! The torque is very addictive and it forces you to drive in a totally different way to a revvy petrol engine, it doesnt bother me though. I've had 1 or 2 wee problems with it, the clutch slipping being the biggest. Its not chronic though and as long as i drive it sensibly it doesnt seem to be a problem.
It started making a police siren noise which got louder over 2-3000 miles and then started to use oil and felt like it was lacking power. Apparently one of the blades had a chunk missing causing it to knock the balance of the turbo off, over time that caused the bearings to wear badly and oil to soak through. Got quite smoky near to the time I changed it!
New one (recon) been on for about 16k miles now, no issues at all apart from the initial setup because it wasn't boosting properly. Just needed the VNT rod & stop screw adjusting to the correct setting.
I've been lucky with my clutch. Its going strong but I think its down to the Custom Code map being very smooth at bring the power in below 2k.![]()
