Hi Guys&Gals !

Took it to SEAT and they ran a VAG on it (free of charge !!!!!) and said it brought up 3 errors:

16486 P0102 035
MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR -G70-
SIGNAL TOO LOW
SPORADIC

17544 P1136 035
LONG TERM FUEL TRIM ADD. FUEL, BANK1
SYSTEM TOO LEAN

16891 P0507 035
IDLE SPEED CONTROL
RPM ABOVE SPECIFIED VALUE
SPORADIC

He reset these errors and said that they shouldn't cause any problems. Maybe a little less MPG, but not that i've noticed.

He said that if the light came on again (it shouldn't), but if it did then it was most likely to be the "Lambda Probe in front of CAT". Which would cost me £107.80 + £60 labour + £29.37 VAT = TOTAL £197.17

But that's only if the light comes on again (fingers crossed it doesn't !!)

He also mentioned that they had been having a lot of problems with this kind of thing and it being possibly linked to owners taking the SEAT radio out and fitting their own !!. Some module in the radio acts as a module for the whole system, or something, and that when radios are changed it can bring up sporadic error codes on the display in months ahead !!! - anyone heard of this ????

Also, he asked me to get SEAT to change the water pump if and when they change the CAM belt, and to ask for a NON-SEAT water bottle because on the SEAT ones the lugs are made of plastic, and other makes they are metal and it might as well be done when changing the CAM belt as they are "buggers to get at" !!! - in his own words !!

But credit to SEAT for doing the VAG test for free and charging me absolutely nothing for the print out and good advice !!!!! - SG PETCH, DURHAM - Credit to you guys !!!

Hello,

Anyone know exactly what any of the codes above would mean to me ?. Garage said there was nothing wrong and he just simply reset the dash light and advised if it came on again then it would most likely be the Lambda Probe infront of the CAT.

Andy

Hi,

Well the light has come on again, 2 days after being reset ! (as i knew it would). Just had it up to the garage and the guy said he would book it in for next Wednesday. He seems to thing the Lambda Probe infront of the CAT needs replacing.

Does the diagnostic VAG test seem to point to it being the Lambda Probe to you guys, does it sound about right what the garage have told me ???. I just don't want to pay £200 next week only to find the light comes back on a day or 2 after and have to pay yet again for another set of diagnostics !! (see below for the diagnostics the VAG test kicked up)

16486 P0102 035
MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR -G70-
SIGNAL TOO LOW
SPORADIC

17544 P1136 035
LONG TERM FUEL TRIM ADD. FUEL, BANK1

16891 P0507 035
IDLE SPEED CONTROL
RPM ABOVE SPECIFIED VALUE
SPORADIC

Do these seem to indicate Lambda Probe infront of CAT needing replacing ?

Quite frankly no.

I think your Maf is poorly. An under-reading MAF will tell the ecu there is less air going into the engine than there really is - and will fuel accordingly - ie put less fuel in than is really needed for the actual volume of airflow. Hence, it's showing as running lean. (My theory only).

And what would the fitting and MAF cost (roughly) ??. Is it worth me asking them to check that out first BEFORE they sting me for the Lambda Probe ??

Andrew

Hi Dave,

Pardon my ignorance ! - what does "exchange" mean ?? - does that mean a second hand / reconditioned unit ?, and would a SEAT garage have those in stock, or would i have to specifically ask for one ?

Best Regards,
Andy

Hi, i've trawled through google for the last hour and a half for these problems and it's becoming a bit more clear that the fault might actually be related to the MAF itself, as Dave has pointed out.

On looking through the net it mentions many people who have taken the MAF off and cleaned it themselves and it has solved the problem !

With my diagnosis saying
"16486 P0102 035
MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR -G70-
SIGNAL TOO LOW
SPORADIC"

The "sporadic" bit seems to suggest to me that it could need cleaning ? or the contacts cleaning ??

Thing is, i am practically a novice with no experience of how to do things in the engine, would this be practical for me to do ? could i take the MAF off and clean it with guidance/help ?

Would some kind soul be generous enough to write me an idiots guide on how to get the MAF off and clean it, what tools i would need and where to look, bearing in mind i am an idiot ?

Kindest Regards,
Andy

If it could save me £230, then it would be much appreciated (3 hungry kids and a spendaholic wife !!)

the maf is very easy to remove, do you know what you are looking at under the bonnet?

you need to remove the airbox first i think and then the maf comes off pretty easily.

Excellent ! - those diagrams are spot on !

Just thinking here, is there a way for me to test whether or not it's the MAF at fault ?. Would i be able to unplug it and start the car and if the orange dash light didn't come on then could i assume it is definitely the MAF sensor from that ?

I just don't want the garage changing the Lambda Probe, and a week later the dast light comes back on and finding it wasn't that after all !

Will it do any harm me trying to start the car with the MAF disconnected ?

Also, if i cleaned the MAF and put it back in, and the MAF was now okay, would the dash light automatically go off, or would that need to be reset ? (in other words, even if i cleaned the MAF and fixed the problem, if the light needs resetting then i wouldn't know if i had fixed it or not !!)

Regards,
Andy

Cheers,
Andy

Unplugging it will put the dash light on. If the problem has gone, the light will go after a couple of restarts.

If you want to come to me at the weekend or meet late afternoon next week, I can clear the codes / rest for you.

Cheers for the quick reply Dave, and thanks for the offer to reset the errors, that's much appreciated !, but i think that the lights are only going to come back on until whatever the problem is gets nuked.

So, say i was to clean the MAF, or get someone who knows how to, and put it back on the car. If that had solved the problem then will the dash-light reset itself automatically after a few restarts ? i.e. i won't have to go back to the garage to get them to reset the light ?

Andy
