Diagnosis / Excess of pollution

hi there folks

i've used the search function for this subject but didn't really help me because they were old threads and they didn't get to the point i am on now.

well a while ago i had this yellow light on my dash board, it just stayed on (this was for about a month, didn't care at all because the car was running fine (ho god i was wrong)

about half hour ago i went to my sister's house (5 min drive) and everything was perfect, however on the way back my engine started to sound like a 1970's Mustang, ratling everywhere and i noticed the light started flashing.

has anyone ever had this symptom?

My car is a 1.4 leon if it makes a diference from other cars
