alternator (positive/negative)

engine ground?

maybe something to do with the 'big three' :)

since i can't find a haynes manual available anywhere. which is a pain. unless someone knows where i can get a haynes manual from because i could really do with one

i believe the alternator is under the bonnet so it would be somewhere around in there........sorry hehe.

I wouldn't have a clue, can you actually get haynes manuals for these?

Wouldn't mind one myself.

What engine have you got ?

On the TDIs the alternator is near the top of the engine, at the front. Just look for the drivebelt. The alternator will have a wiring loom attached to the back.

The engine will be grounded to the bodywork somewhere by a metal strap.

What are you fitting ?

1,9 tdi, it's for the 'big three' for audio

battery -ve to chassis (already got this)
alternator +ve to battery +ve
engine ground to chassis

ps are these things also safe for the car?

The alternator positive to battery positive will be the chunky lead coming out the back of the alternator, which connects to the battery positive.

Engine ground to chassis - this will be a wire or metal braid strap connecting the engine/gearbox metalwork to the bodyshell of the car. Can't remember where it is, I'd start looking somewhere around the gearbox end....

I don't know exactly what you're trying to wire up, but just be very careful...you would be wise to work with the battery disconnected. (Make sure you have any radio codes first)
If you accidentally touch, say, the alternator positive cable to the bodywork or engine (or any exposed metalwork) sparks will fly big time !

is the alternator the silvery thing with a tight bunch of wires inside it, just to
the front/left of the engine, near the bonnet/top?

the engine ground poss by gearbox....will i nede to jack the car up?

will def d/c battery :) got aftermarket head unit :)

You're just fitting an aftermarket head unit ?

Surely this doesn't mean you need to go wiring in the engine bay

the reason i need the big three is because when i turned the volume about 28/35, the lights dim on bass hits.

and ive just ordered an alpine m650 amp because the JL 4 channel gets too hot. d'oh :D

My lights dim, how do I stop it

In most cases it's a simple task. Have a look at your battery. There's an earth cable coming off the -ve terminal right? ( If there isn't you're doing well to get any sound ) Right well basically you need to upgrade that cable to something a bit better. Get yourself a length of 4awg, or thicker if you must, and connect that to the -ve terminal as well. Now take the other end and connect that to the cars chassis.

Unfortunatley if this doesn't fix the problem you are looking at upgrading the battery, and then even the Alternator itself to fix the problem properly.

Are you running a sound system? If so the bass on the amp needs to be turned down and if that dosnt cure it you will need a power cap
