ok this might be a opinion thing but once up and running , like accelrating does the Diesel sound better than the petrol? my mate has the diesel and it has a rasp to the exhaust that can clearly be heard but in my petrol nothing.. now hes done 900 (motorway miles) and i done 200 (normal & motorway) . Is it cos its not run in ( yes the run in thing again - previous threads......)

does anyone have a sound clip?

Think its a opinion thing really...

Tho i've yet to see anyone prefer the diesel "sound" over a petrol's at a set of lights :D

Ohhhhhh derv sounding better than a petrol, your a brave man!
.....either way no it doesn't.
Tractor yes, proper car no. (baits his hook.....)

Hook latched on to smarty pants! I bet if TVR did a DERV it would sound nice :p

Mike_obd's dirty diesel sounds great when he boots it and your outside the car tbh, sounds very "performance car" like indeed! When your stood just behind the car and he gentle sets off, all you can hear is the turbo whilst.... very nice tbh!

Best sounding diesel ive heard, and I own one :D

His is a full miltek de-cat performance exhaust tho...

at idle its gotta be petrols, but when a diesel is being booted with the turbo spooled up, i personally dont think they sound too bad, though im not saying i prefer it over a petrol

Listen, i am a fan of diesels but its quite obvious that petrols sound alot better.
But TBH just imagine you just pulled a nice blonde and youre trying to get her number.
The mere sound of your agricultural diesel tractor might be enough to put her off.

i think the guy means the sound on the go, not at idle.

You would be surprised at how meaty a TDi sounds on the go, a lot more turbo comes through.

But hey my old 1.8T used to spit and bang between gear changes,

oh an am not talking bout modified ones,
The thing is with my FR i cant hear it at all...how quiet/loud is ur petrol? on the move that is at idle it sounds alrite

And this "nice blonde" is going to know the difference of course :p

No... she will be more interested when the car she is in (the diesel) smokes a petrol car for performance :D

Ner ner :D

Standard v Standard...

Petrol when idle, but its a close one when booting in tbh imo!

the vibrations from the engine ;) plus she wouldn't hear the engine over all her moaning "god it's big" ........... "james, James" :cheeky: :bleh:

p.s why would you randomly pull someone go back to your car turn the engine on and then get her number :p

back to thread reving high in a petrol the best, but the grunt form a tuned 1.9tdi is v nice as well.

yeah but said girl would run a mile if she saw you in a toledo, cos she would think "uh ho, there's only one reason a man would buy a toledo, and that means he has a family and slippers at home" assuming your reasoning behind her disliking a guy cos he had a TDi.

Or if she heard a guy had a tdi she may think, great, he saves so much money on fuel he can spend more on the importan things in life such as going out.

:p :p

Diesels only seem to sound good with the windows down on a narrow road with walls either side to be honest, its only the turbo noise that seems interesting. The pitch of a 4 potter going upto 4.5k is very low and sleep inducing - not very fun and one of the reasons i really miss a petrol car.

Decat and a mufflerectomy may make things a little better, but if you want some excitement, go for the petrol - much more noise potential with a few mods.

i have to say you can make a tdi sound good but the fr 20vt already sounds good spaniels fr sound lovely when not at idle but the petrol gets to higher notes and faster so its a totally different sound. it like comparing football and rugby both are good sports but hard to find wich is best when put together
