Does your TDi like Shell Diesel?

I have only ever put shell in mine (inc. the old one) and never had problems. But after reading some of the posts, I'm going to try BP on the next fill up and see what happens.

Only problem is that the car only has 1100 miles on it.

How do you work that one out?! Your still getting to the same speed, which will require the same amount of Kinetic energy to be produced from the Diesel fuel's chemical potential energy, which leaves one main factor - the engines thermal efficiency.

This is all comes down to how efficient the mapping is at controlling the fuel/boost air mixture. As a remap is generally car specific, they are tuned in harmony with the engines characteristics, whereas a factory map is much more generic.

Dave: No doubt yor car will get better over time as the remap will apply short-term settings, however if it really is bad, the map could be faulty, wrong tyre pressures, driving style, journey types could be to blame.

My car delivers almost 600 miles to the tank now after a remap, it used to do a little over 500 to the tank.

I hope the re-map gives me better economy I only get between 300-350 miles per tank out of my PD130. I wouldn't say I have a heavy right foot like, but put it this way, I've had my car 3 months and I've not yet been overtaken! lol

Over on the IOM we only have the choice between Shell or Total. We used to have an ESSO garage, but they were stocked with Total...if you can believe that?! BP would be good, get me Nectar points like, so when I come over next month that'll be the garage I'll be going to, lol.

Whats the price of diesel over there at the moment, roughly as I know it varies? We're paying 99.9p per litre as comparison.

a question for all your Derv boys ?

is it true it takes more crude oil to produce diesel as there is very little by products of any use ??

How many miles!!! I've only ever seen 420 as a max! most the time i get around 360-380!

I'm gona try n drive like a granny till the light comes on, and see how many miles i get.

btw, question about sps1...when u revert the settings back to "stock" mode, is it an instant change, or does it take a while for the settings to adjust, like when u first get revo'd?

As if the economy is always gona be crap, i mite keep it on stock mode during the week, and use performance mode at the weekend!

Have to say I've used every bloody type of diesel, from Rix Bio to BP Ultimate to Shell Extra to Esso Energy to Total Excellium to Asda / Tesco etc etc and......................

although I THINK I've been able to tell some difference between brands, performance and economy have NEVER changed in ANY way that can't be accounted for by ambient temperature, or whether I've been doing m-way miles or city driving.

This is a 2002 PD130. I firmly believe it's more to do with how long the fuel's been stored at the filling station, and the equipment in the filling station i.e. are the tanks clean and not full of water, slime & crap and are the pumps clean too :)

On a trip to work at 78 mph on cruise some days I get 52 indicated mpg and others I get 56. Similar weather / traffic / time conditions. Weird really, but its over 50 so I'm happy :D
One word can explain that: wind.

At motorway speeds, air resistance is the one thing that dominates over all other factors. Even a 5 mph headwind will make a noticeable difference to your fuel economy, even though it feels like identical weather conditions to the previous day. The difference you're seeing could easily be the result of having a 5 mph headwind instead of a 5 mph tailwind.

I've always used Shell Diesel. In my PD'130', TDI '90' and now my PD'75'.. all other stuff is just crap. Whenever I fill up with any other brand (except BP) it just drives like a dog.

Perhaps cars have favorite colours, afterall, sheel diesel extra is blue, normal shell is clear, BP ultimate is green...........

My dad has picked up his new motor last week - a Golf 110BHP TDi and to be honest, the economy is nothing to write home about. I believe Tdis need mileage to make them more economical. My car has almost 70K on the clock!

I have been using BP diesel this week and I have to say that although the economy is good, the power it gives is not. Car does not feel perky :(

Back to Esso for the next tank ... ;)

around town it says im doing 60mpg

think if i went on a long motorway trip i could get 700miles!

my mate has the mk4 tdi 130bhp ibiza and he gets about 350 to a tank

I've noticed the different colours to the fuel....which makes me wonder, is this purely as a result of the way different companies make/blend their fuels, or do you think they they add some artificial colouring ?
How long before we see the fuel companies proudly advertising "no artificial colourings" :D

thats wot i thort! so shud i b worried that im finding it harder to get similar mpg figures?

i only had her revo'd on saturday, so its coming up to a week, does it take time to adjust to give the better economy? like wen u first run a car in? as it took about a month before i was really starting to b impressed with the mpg anyway.

Dave, I think your keyboard is faulty :)

I thought you meant me!!

I get about 550 to 600 per tank out of the Toledo, chuffed to bits. I commute for 4 days doing 112 miles per day, so I end up with a 1/4 tank left after my shifts which still doesn't get used up by the time I restart my shift pattern 4 days later.

I would still go back to a petrol though if I get a job closer to home. I'll be doing less than 12K per year then so the cost difference per month would be very small.

i have mainly used morrisons as its about 200 yards from my house and can say when other fuels have been used i haven't noticed any difference.

but then thats because i presumed they bought there fuel from either bp, esso etc as i didn't think supermarkets had there own oil refineries!.

There's absolutely no difference between Shell, Esso, BP, Asda, Tesco diesel, it all comes from the same refineries, it all depends what condition, state of tune your vehicle is in that decides what mpg you achieve.
The trouble is you guys are thinking about it too much, don't believe the marketing hype, it's all bullshit, the comment about how clean and modern the pumps and tanks are is a far more relevant factor, fill up at your local supermarket and save some dosh.
