I have copied this thread (Tfsi> FR tdi) over from the Mk2 Leon section since it may well be of relevance.

Prospective purchasers of any VAG 170 tdi fitted with a diesel particulate filter may be interested to read the following link before placing their order.

VAG deny that there is any problem and they have even produced special DPF question and answer brochures which are available from their reception desks. Something at the back of my mind makes me think that perhaps they protest too much.

I have just found this in What Car's customer feedback for the Leon FR 170 tdi.
It seems a pretty typical response from those who have experienced DPF problems with this engine (warning lights followed by the dreaded limp mode, repeatedly).
Not that it is any consolation, but Peugeot (PSA) are also having similar problems with their DPFs.

QUOTE:
"Firstly let me say, this car is a joy to drive and I love it. It pulls like a train when asked to, is reasonably good on diesel and once it's warm doesn't sound too bad either. The interior is modern looking and to my mind feels solid. The leather steering wheel and sports seats are particular high points.

But now the low point. I have had the car for two months and done 4000 miles. I do a 1h45m round trip to and from work everyday, the car gets nice and warm and 45 minutes of the trip are spent 'making good time' over national speed limit country roads, so the engine has plenty of chance to get warm. Despite this the DPF (diesel filter) light comes on almost every two weeks. This in itself is not a problem: the manual says do 40mph for 15 mins in fourth gear and the filter will burn off all the soot. Trouble is, this doesn't work. Instead the engine management light comes on, all power is lost and the car goes into limp mode. This has happened four times in the two months I have had the car, resulting in numerous trips to the garage and expense on my part.

The garage say there is nothing they can do. They just reset the warning lights and send me on my way, waiting for me to come back in the following week or two. Apparently I am not alone in having this problem, but Seat refuse to do anything about it. You have been warned".

I don't know what happened to that link but it should be correct now. It is certainly okay on the Leon Mk2 (FR Tdi > Tfsi thread).

ALL manufacturers are having problems with DPF, and the whole system itself.
Blame the EU for that

Reading the stuff about DPFs is is what made me go for the 140 (Which arrived at the Dealers yesterday:D) rather than the 170.

We have a Passat at work with a DPF and that went funny earlier this week.

My last car was a Pug 307 HDI 110 and that had a DPF on it.
Car went back to the dealers loads of times with the same symptoms, and the first few times they blamed the DPF. First time they regenerated it for me, and that cured nothing. Second time they renewed the DPF fluid claiming it was a known bad batch. cured it for about 300 miles, but problem returned. Never got it sorted and i vowed my next car would be a non DPF Diesel. Looks like i may be forced into getting one next time :(

Audi have had problems with faulty sensors - it could be of a simlar nature?!? The VW marques DONNOT talk to each other even though some of the parts come from the same spares bin!!!Check out some of the Audi web sites like this and it may help your Dealer. .............
