Clocked up over 20k in my 1.6 TDI and also never had a DPF problem

The dpf system doesn't seem to be a problem if you do reasonable mileage, but it does annoy somewhat when you do a 100 mile motorway journey and just down the road its starts to do a regen. What they need is an indicator that shows the dpf saturation level, and a manual switch that the driver can use to begin a regen, so if you know you are going to be driving down a motorway, you can do a regen at your convenience. The computer can be set up to override and control the regens if you don't do it yourself or determine various parameters that must be met. So for example, it won't let you begin a manual regen if the engine is not up to working temp. Can't be too difficult, and would surely allow those of us with reasonable intelligence like most of the peeps on this forum to have a little bit more control.
 
I normally have to do 8-10 miles at 2000-2500rpm before the dpf clears in my 1.6cr . The light came on in town last week, I made a de tour to the nearest dual carriageway about a mile away to clear it. I kept the car in 1st and 2nd gear for this mile, in traffic, getting up to 3000 rpm, the light cleared before I got to the duel carriageway !!

How you do this doesn't actually matter to the DPF.

That's a slight lie, in my early days of owenership I thought "sod it, i'll just go for a blast down snakes pass, that should get it nice and hot"
So off I went, warmed the car up then went for a nice full throttle drive taking the engine all the way to the redline in each gear (that'll get it nice and hot i thought to myself) [yes, i know it's pointless in a diesel as you're out of the torque band but a PB time wasn't the objective]

Yeah, that didn't work too well, ended up hitting limp mode and needing an AA truck to tow my sorry car back home.

I came to the conclusion that doing that ended up producing soot quicker than the DPF could clear in a regen, so be gentle with it. haha

If my DPF light's on i'll keep the revs up at traffic lights, look like a ******, but when it's my £1000 on the line I couldn't care :cartman:

Agree as above - if you look in to it the system leans out between 1800 and 2400 rpm for emmisions purposes - this also runs the exhaust at its hottest temp to clear the dpf.

As has already been pointed out - this rpm conveniently lets you do 70mph in 5th, 60mph in 4th & 50mph in third.

It is the combination of steady rpm between 1800 and 2400 that clears it best.
