I owned a mk6 VW Golf GTD from 2011 to 2016 - had it from new. The seats on the mk6 GTI, GTD and R models had quite prominent side bolsters, so there was an increased risk of premature bolster collapse or bolster fabric wear - particularly on the driver’s seat outer bolsters if the seat occupant applied excessive pressure onto the bolsters or brushed against them heavily when getting in and out of the seat. There were reports of premature wear on some of the Golf forums during the mk6 Golf era and the general consensus was that it was caused by lack of driver care getting into or out of the seat.
I was always very careful getting in and out of those heavily bolstered seats and when I sold my car at five years old, the seats were still as new with no signs of wear.
@missmouse - a good auto upholstery trimmer should be able to repair your seat - if you do an internet search for auto upholstery trimmers in your area, you’ll probably find some; check the customer reviews and photo galleries on their websites when choosing which ones to contact. Hope you get it sorted ?.
Last owner was very careful about looking after the car. I didnt really notice the wear at first so didnt ask but he wasnt a big guy & did mostly long trips. Its not excessively worn, just a bit more that Id have expected. I know leather gets a " worn in" look!
