I was looking at one of these for my new Astra GTC but it pushed my insurance up quite a bit (with Elephant) so I left it.

Wrong! Seen about 5mpg increase today while testing it! and that was with planting my foot! Was getting about 37mpg but now getting 42/43mpg since putting the chip on!

im not talking about fuel economy. I'm talking about tdi power. More fuel = more power.
On petrols a leaner mix creates more power. Too much fueling in diesels and too little in petrols has detrimental effects

True, but also the same amount of fuel at higher pressure gives better atomization meaning a more complete and efficient burn = more power and less un-burned fuel being thrown out the exhaust.

My basic knowledge of this after going through quite a lot of tuning with TDI's are the fact that there comes a point where too much fuelling decreases performance. But upto that point more fuel through out the rev range creates more power but also higher EGT's which in turn can cause head gasket failure, pistons etc

This guy is saying less fuel more boost. WHich as far as i am aware is a basic termonology for creating more power for a petrol variation?

Resulting in using less fuel as your getting more power for the same amount of fuel/revs

Stonesie's comment doesn't indicate that there will be better mpg in comparison to standard so i am struggling to understand your logic?

I think that comes from using the increased efficiency, you would need marginally less fuel to produce the same torque/power so that would equate to better mpg.

Depends how you use the engine, use the extra grunt and you wont get the economy, set the cruise control to 70 (obviously ;) ) and do a good few miles up the motorway and back and you will see a MPG gain.

I'm seriously looking at either this or a BlueFin for a bit more poke or a cheaper 400 mile round trip to see my brother (Doncaster - Newport and back)

I've just lifted this from DTUK's "How it works" page. Note, in the 2nd paragraph, It's says that the box allows MORE FUEL to be injected into the cylinders and you will only see increases in mpg due to having more torque and using less throttle in situations where you would have to use more. It all depends how you drive the car? You'll have to be driving very economically to start with to see any real gains.

How it Works:
Todays diesel engines have many sensors which are controlled by the vehicles ECU these signals are processed many thousands of times in one second to maintain that the vehicle is running at its optimum efficiency and keeping the emissions and economy at acceptable levels.

The idea behind the tuning box is to intercept the signal between the ECU and the injection system usally the common rail and basically allows it to inject more fuel into the cylinders thus producing more torque and power, and because of this the engine is running more efficiently the fuel consumption is also improved because you would have to use less throttle for similar conditions.

I couldn't believe how quickly I was getting better Mpg though! Thats with booting often!

Whatever you get, as long as you're happy with it, that's all that counts.

Good call!

I understand how remaps can be more personal but how adaptable the chip is, it so much out weighs the pros of a remap! As my car is new and had three year warranty I need to be able to remove it!

Also, from my years of experience of these, they are bullet proof! Also you can change to different maps, and power settings depending on your driving style! Plus DTUK are also developing the maps and issue software updates!

Couldn't ever justify a chip! imho, they're never as good and reliable as a map!
