Electronic handbrake won’t release

Bit of a confusing topic as I can’t really explain what I mean very well but hopefully someone will understand.

When I normally start to drive off, my E-handbrake automatically disengages and I am able to smoothly drive off without any problems, but occasionally (also seems to happen the majority of the time when I drive to work at night for some reason) it doesn’t disengage and I’m unable to move. I press the handbrake button so it turns the red light off and press the brake pedal like it instructs me to, but I’m still unable to move as the handbrake is engaged. It does eventually disengage after a horrible thud sound and jerk motion and makes me feel like I’m damaging something every time it does that. Does anyone else have this or know why it’s happening?

Sorry if this is me just being stupid but I’m doing what the dealership told me to do when I asked how it worked! Thanks in advance

Unless one of the doors is open then the brake should disengage as soon as the button is pressed or the clutch starts to bite.

If it it still dragging when the red light on the button or dash is out then it sounds like a fault, either the motor is sticking or the pad/caliper is jamming.

Is it still under warranty?

I've got the normal handbrake, the rear pads stick to the discs after driving in heavy rain and release with a clunk.

None of the doors are open, it’s weird because it normally works fine but occasionally does as I described. Yes it is still under warranty, needs to be serviced soon so will let them know about it. It never happens when someone else is in the car annoyingly

The only time I've had something similar is where the car has been stood idle for days after heavy rain, so all the discs are corroded and the pads seized in place - it makes an awful noise as they break free and lots of grinding until some heavy braking polishes the discs up.

Also, when you arrive at your destination, check how hot your wheels are - the rears should be a lot cooler than the front. If you have a sticky caliper then that wheel can get get very hot.

Mine does this - electronic handbrake off, try to pull away but it still feels like it's on. It's usually just the brakes sticking and only happens after I've driven in the wet the day before.

I rejected my old 1.4FR because this exact problem.. took it back to my dealer who attempted to fix the problem and failed, sent the car of to Seat UK who then deemed the car Unsafe! The problem never got resolved so I ended up with a new car.. only problem being is I was driving round in a terrible courtesy car for 3 months whilst Seat tried to work the problem out on my Leon, yet never could, I wish you luck if you have to go down this route!

Thanks for the replies guys, we’ve not had rain here for about a week and it’s still doing it unfortunately. Will definitely be telling them when it goes in for its service

I certainly hope it’s not that! Think I’ve got one of the more rare cupras with it being a 300 SC with a manual gearbox! Cheers anyway

This happened me the other week I normally only drive the car at weekends so was left on the drive with the handbrake on I normally just leave it in park with the handbrake off but I forgot. The car wouldnt move and i had to rev it to get it to release, it released with an almighty clunk. After it started moving it sounded like i had a flat tyre it kept binding on every wheel rotation. Worried that i had damaged the pad or dislodged it from the caliper i jacked the car up and spun the wheels by hand they did spin freely although binded a little bit on one spot so i was confident it was safe to drive and just done a few hard brakes to get rid of any rust build up and it was fine. There is a small groove on one of the discs so not sure if it could have been a stone. I also pulled the handbrake button at about 5 mph in case it was the handbrake mechanism that was sticking. I would advise noone to do this at speed lol because it locked the rear brakes hard.

I don’t think that the electric handbrakes are quite there yet personally, I’ve heard of people having various issues with them. very nice when they work don’t get me wrong but I feel more confident when I used to physically put the handbrake on!
