i had this on my fr tdi 170 and its very annoying and dangerous when coming to a junction it just used to die on me but then start up without a problem.......this was until i had my dpf removed and had the remap to suit ''touch wood'' it has'nt cut out once in the 2 months since the dpf was removed and it used to do this at least a few times a week plus mine was constantly doing the regen process every other day and was p***ing me right off!!!! its a totally different car to drive now, its worlds apart :D

Out of curiosity, Does anyone know what the the life expectancy of the DPF is??

I read 100k somewhere. Like anything, depends on the life use of the car.

Cheers, I was told roughly between 70-80k depending on usage of the car.

Mine has just ticked on to 69k but don't know what to do with the DPF regarding the new MOT guide lines.

I'm guessing wait until they come into play and go from there.

Gaz...

Gazza - Quick question, how have you been with yours?

OK...so tonight it happened again and funny thing is, I can feel when it is as the car feels like it's doing a regen as it's very stuttering and feels like it's a got a bit of lag! However, upon checking another forum with a vRS that's having some issues similar to mine - sounds like it's the DPF nearly blocked and I have probably stopped the last 2 regens as I have been in town and it wasn't convient for me to hop on motorway.

If I go for a blast at 2500 - 3000rpm will this sort out?

It hasn't happened to me since NYE but then again I haven't really used it,

I do think it's definitely a problem lined to the DPF, as you say you can sort of hear or feel something ain't quite right, I have noticed when mine is in regen mode the exhaust pops and gurgles a fair bit

I'm hoping the DPF won't need replacing just yet though :(

Oh I think it's suggested to go for a run at around 3k revs for about 10 mins to burn it off

Mine has just ticked onto 69k, had no problems at all until it got to around the 60k ish mark,

It's very frustrating :(

my fr is running funny too, lumpy idle and a rattle been told i need new intake flap motor and solenoid valve at the intake mainfold

Just a few things, nothing major other than the cutting out, other things like strange noises and the sound like its leaking boost plus the lack of power (doesn't seem to be anywhere near as quick as when I bought it, but I don't know if it's just because I've got used to it)

yea I have strange noises clicking coming from behind the glove box, mines the same had a 130 bhp passat up my ass and couldn’t shake him lol, hopefully these two things is what’s wrong

Had mine do it yesterday, coming off a motorway sliproad, lights at the top so was slowing down, engine cut out doing about 30mph.

As I said, I think it's DPF related but in the incident above I'd just been on the motorway for 20 miles so it shouldn't have been filling up. Plus if it's that full then the light should come on. I do motorway driving almost all week, 2 * 25 mile journeys a day plus more other times, doing about 65/70 in 6th gear most of the time - I wonder if this is too low revs (just under 2k) for normal burn-off? but as I said, it's extremely rare that I see the DPF light on. Mine's on 111k but first had the problem many miles ago.

ive been told its 3rd gear at 3k for 15mins, dunno if true tho

I am same as you mate, spend a lot of my morning sat on quick roads and motorway in 6th at 1500rpm usually which I didnt think should be an issues if I am honest.

Let's hope this isn't another issue that will turn big like the injectors.....

Same here, I work nights so I have a clear run to and from work 60 odd mile round trip, mainly 60-70ish mph so I can't see how it would clog up, the only warning light I had show up on the dash was when an exhaust sensor went, other than that the only other light that pops up now and then is low fuel light lol.

I think 3k is a bit too high - you're pushing more soot through it at those revs.
I've done a check on the soot levels when it's been doing it's shitty idling and they've never been above say 30%, last time I checked it was doing it around 20% which AFAIK is not meant to cause either stage 1 or stage 2 regen.
I've spent a fair bit though trying to get it sorted (with the labour etc) - replacement MAF, fuel filter, general diagnostics etc - even had the head mechanic take it home for a couple of nights but the f*cking thing didn't do it at all when he had it!. It never seems to do it on the way to the dealers lol, can run like a bag of **** all week then as soon as it gets on the journey to its service it runs like a dream! :(

It's strange though because I've had the problem for a few years now and if it was something serious then I'd have expected it to go by now - probably covered over 60k miles since first noticing it. Been to two dealers and neither can pin it down. No error codes or anything!

Luke - I found that when it was running crap on idle (but not at 1k revs), disconnecting the MAF sensor clip solved the problem instantly. Obviously not a good idea to carry on like this, but might be worth doing to see if it's the same as mine. Disconnecting will throw up a light on the dash but will go off again once you re-connect. And yes, I had the MAF replaced (thinking this was the problem) but nope - still a bag of spanners! :(
