Hello, I bought not so long Seat Ibiza Mk4 2002 1.4 100BHP Sport as my first car, the engine light was on so I bought U281 to read my trouble codes and I received 2 enigne faults ;

17591 - Linear o2 Sensor/Reference Volatge : Short to Plus : P1183
17604 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heater Circuit B1 S1 : Electrical Malfunction : P1196

Do them both faults appear to be Lambda Sensor problem, I am thinking that it's the first lambda and I want to buy that one :

NGK Front Lambda Sensors Seat Ibiza MK4 1.4i 16V 02> LZA11-V2 - type it on ebay as I am allowed to post URLs after I have made 15posts.

Do you think it will resolve my problem?
Many thanks.

I think that your ideas are correct, yes that is the sensors that is before the main cat, and yes buying a NGK one is the right idea, although, maybe check your local VAG dealer for prices. Its NGK that VAG fit at factory and if you fit the correct one that comes ready to fit with wiring etc, then it should be identical to the VAG sourced part.

Edit:- This happened to my wife's 9N Polo 1.4 75PS - originally it was an intermittant fault, but as it started happening more often, I checked up prices and settled on getting my local VW place to order one in, on that car it is fitted in the "manucat" - ie first cat that is also the manifold.

Thanks for your help ;)
I will order it on Friday.

I've got three other faults for SRS:

00532 - transmission controle module relay - supply voltage (B+) malfunction low batter or bad ground
or Supplly voltage (B+)
or Supply voltage B +
65535 - control unit failure or internal control module keep alive memory (KAM) error, or power failure to central unit or bad ground contacts
01281 - airbag : drivers side : disabled

00532 and 65535 look like an old battery was damaged so i've put yesterday new one and car stars every time without problems and got good supply of power (old one I had to charge every day for car to start, after two or three starts battery was dead)

So I've changed battery to new one and faults are still on, any ideas?
Thanks :)

VCDS does some pretty useful advice on fault codes:

http wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/65535
http wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00532

Both those seem to be related. Providing they're both related to the transmission control module, think you can put it down to the old battery and simply reset these and see if they come back.

Did you reset the faults or just replace the battery?

Did both but looks like faults didn't dissapear because they are still on.

Hi all I've just got my First car. ibiza 2001 (51) 1.4 8v chill. Bought it cheap as pretty low on funds.
i'm freaking out a little bit atm. I filled up at bp.
3 miles down the road i get the engine light come on and stay on. Drive home saying please dnt die on me. Pull in drive, turn off. Had my dinner, went out to car and i now have the EPC light on aswell. They do not come and go they are on permantly.
Googled it to many different forums. (now im worried). ive seen comments that say its a sensor, brake lights not working, brake lights are about to fail, accelerator sensor switch needs changing, clutch sensor failed, throttle body f....d, car is f......d, cat failed, exhaust needs changing. needs a service and it goes on and on.

Im not exactly mechanical just basic stuff. change a bulb etc.

Please could someone help as i just need to know is the car about to breakdown if i do a 60 mile trip or is this a sensor problem that is an odd job that can be fixed anytime.

Thank you in advance

You need to post in the correct forum, ie the Ibiza Mk3 type 6K and not the Ibiza Mk4 6L forum.

And get breakdown cover.......

The engine and EPC lights come on regularly in the dog of a 2002 Mk 4 Ibiza I bought just over a year ago.

Front lambda sender replaced.
Temperature sensor replaced.
Timing belts [two] renewed.
R/H front suspension bush [the hard one to replace] renewed.

The pollen filter made me laugh, the original owner had never changed it.

Can some one confirm for me that them two faults are for front lambda sensor as I want to order it tommorow morning and replace it.
Here are faults ;
17591 - Linear o2 Sensor/Reference Volatge : Short to Plus : P1183
17604 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heater Circuit B1 S1 : Electrical Malfunction : P1196

Thank you all for support ;)

These are exactly the same fault codes that were logged in my wife's 2003MY Polo 9N 1.4 SE back in October 2008 - and I replaced the first Lambda probe - back then, from VW it cost £108.45 + VAT, dealer cut that back to £92.18 + VAT, but even at the first price it ended up around the same price as getting a genuine NTK (NGK) one delivered to my door.

If its of any comfort, my wife's Polo 9N 1.4SE, bought new, starting giving problems - ARB, front springs - when it was about 5 years old, when it was about 7 years old it was front flexi section of exhaust and TCA bushes, of course the timing belts etc have been replaced twice. The ECU S/W is probably needing updated but VW don't seem to know anything about that issue, so I get VCDS out every 3 weeks in the winter to clear "bank2 camshaft sensor" error, these cars don't have "Vee" engines! Throttle body port for EGR valve was choked by the time it was 10 years old. Yes these cars keep you and your scan tool busy, I'm glad I don't need to pay for a garage to read/clear fault codes. Oh and front lambda sensor at 8 years old.

Definately not one of VAGs finest platforms (Fabia+Polo+Ibiza) 6Q/9N/6L.

Thanks, RUM, but it's no comfort at all, I lost all faith in motorised transport when I turned my weekend hobby of messing about with my Beetle into a business in 1975.

I remember working on a 1975 Golf n 1976, and thinking what a tin box it was, compared to the Beetle.

I retired from business in 1988, just before everything went electronic, and I've since learned that 85% of car faults are now caused by electronic failure.
One step forward, three steps back.

Of course you could always move to the land of really nasty spiders - Australia, and get back into car fixing, hourly rates in Perth suburbs are huge it seems, and secondhand cars cost a fortune compared with UK, for example, my daughter has just bought a Holden Barina, ie a rebadged Vauxhall Corsa B, its a 1997 model with 143,000Km on the clock at $2000 it seems it's a snip - that car tends to get offered for around £450 in UK. I would have thought that if mechanics rates were high, the secondhand car prices would be low - but not so, though new small cars cost roughly the same as they do in UK! Daughter is on UK wages and only there for a year so buying new makes no sense, but its costing her dear keeping it fit for use.

To be honest, I would not judge VW or VAG by what these nasty resuited Sokda mini cars are like, yes its their fault and our problems, but SURELY they have learned from that mistake. Just think, if Fabia 6Q, Polo 9N and Ibiza 6L were sold in USA, VAG would have been bankrupted by now!

At the ripe old age of 72, the last things on my agenda are going back to work or moving from sunny Spain to Oz, especially not POHM ridden Perth.

I know a bit about cars prices down under, my old NZ buddy was in car sales for many years in Melbourne, until his untimely death 2 years ago, aged 59.

Cars are a necessary evil for me and Mrs E, we live out in the campo.
