my mk2 1.4 aex engine (saves you all asking) is becoming very noiesy at the top end mainly tappets and power has suffered greatly now im wondering how easy it is to replace the tappets as there hydrocolic and the oil was replaced with semi sythetec about two month ago before you all say oil when it was serviced there are two main questions on my mind would it be worth replacing them or getting a stage two head made up for it i know that sounds drastic but moneys tight and i cant do a whole engine swap yet

What exactly does a so called 'stage 2' (i hate this 'stage' nonsense) head have on it? And what benefit do you think that would make on a 1.4 (no offence intended)?

If money's tight, just bolt on a replacement head from a scrappy....

Tappets are noisy because of the oil change for a guess, my 1.4 did this. Didnt flush the old oil just drained and refilled and it caused it to make a racket. Full flush and new oil later it was fine.

he said he changed oil two months ago and a loss of power ,,

unless timing has moved i would say either tappets need adjusting or time for a new head ,,or and valves , needs more investigating ,,

not doubting anything but what make of oil is it your using ?? and sae type etc

its been known that putting the wrong type of oil in your engine over a short time around two months it will break down causing it not to flow to well in the nooks and crannys , tappets will always suffer if this is the case ,, i used to know a guy called oilman on many car forums he would prescribe the perfect oil for your car , what ever the make model , ,,

theres a place near me that can do some great head work , inc porting , and better cams for higher lift , would all benifit with larger carbs and good exhaust , there called sutton rebore based in carshalton surrey . ,hth helps ,
