Engine type without using engine code or sticker

I know you can find out an engine in a Mk1 Seat Cupra R by the code in the back or by the bell housing but what if these aren't there and you were looking at an engine without a car.

Any visual ways apart from above of seeing a 180 210 225 from each other?

the engine code is imprinted on the top of the engine block, drivers side, look nr the oil cap - you may have to take the engine cover off though.

Thanks just went to look and I can see GERMANY WW0 RAU and a number (maybe engine number) on the front. It also has a vw/audi sign. Should the code be with this lot?

I have just looked at pics of a auq engine so this is either a AMK/BAM due to the piping going to the turbo from the back with the heat warning sign on it.

There is no good reason to erase the engine number stamped into the block itself. If it's been ground off then assume the engine is dodgy.

On mine you can see the code without even taking the cover off, it's on the drivers side front of the engine on a little rectangular tab, looks like it's been done with a punch as it's made up of dots.

As you say I'm pretty sure a Cupra R engine could only be AMK or BAM.

Not necessarily...

If the engine was replaced under warranty then it will not have any codes stamped on it. Seen it before.

All 1.8 t are the same any way it's the rods that have either a 19mm wrist pin or a 20mm

Can you mix and match the 1.8t? I.E. add the inlet manifold and turbo from a 210 to a 180 (or worringly something even lower) bottom end? Is there a parts code I could go off instead?

Getting concerned that I will never be able to work out what engine this is!

I notice there are a lot of "1.8 R4 20vT 110-221kW"engines. Are these 210 and 225 really distinct to spot compared to all the rest in the 1.8 r4 group in other cars?

I've got an amk head aug bottom end , the inlet manifolds are different the throttle body's are on opposite sides but you can use them if you re route the charge pipe if you have a cupra

Thank goodness I have found out the engine is from searle and was an AMK direct replacement However it doesn't have the engine code on it but has a serial number to trace it back to this company!
