Exhaust emmission warning light

my sisters car has started showing the exhaust emission warning light it is not flashing and the manual states flashing it means engine fault take to dealer so what happens if it is on constant? any ideas?

VAGCom is the only sure way of knowing whats wrong - its just a general warning light really, could be anything from a faulty brake switch, a missfire, to a probe packing up.....!

My sister's Lupo had the same problem recently - restricted to about 15mph and eventually cut-out all together


Diagnosed as a throttle position fault ... eventually found to be a section of loom that had fretted somewhere behind the dash and was causing a short-circuit
(so get it checked by someone with VagCom, but stay open-minded about the true cause - VagCom is sometimes, but not always gospel)
