My Ibiza sdi decided to commit suicide on friday.

I stopped at some lights, smelt plastic burning smell, a tiny amount of smoke from engine and stopped just down the road, well actually vosa check point at switch island, liverpool.

popped the bonnet catch, got out and then heard it crackling and called the fire brigade, 'what kind of car is it?' they ask, just get here im thinking.

Anyhow, only took two minutes for them to get there by which time the front was ruined, and everything in the engine bay had melted to the road.

Ive now bought a Skoda Fabia tdi, boring but well made.

Only thing i will say is that if you see any kind of smoke or smell anything from the engine bay stop straight away. And id leave the bonnet well alone if it looks like its kicking off under there.

Incidentally, the skoda passenger window is stuck up, with the motor whirring happilly but no movement, any ideas?

Thanks Glynn, ill give that a look next weekend see if I can find out what it is.

I saw a place offering regulators new for about £60, does that sound about right?

Why cant VW group make electric windows that work? I was an expert like the F1 pit crews on one of my last ibizas, taking off the door card and putting the window back on the runner.

Jayt - Just had a small amount of smoke from the engine bay coming up through the vents by the wipers, i pulled over straight away, but it started getting worse straight away. Not entirely sure what caused it, as anything that isnt metal just melted onto the road.

Crikey :(

Bet you're glad you were driving a diesel, as the fuel is far less flammable than petrol, and presumably that bit safer in situations such as this.

Any pics ?

One thing i have always done is stop straight away if there is any sign of bad running on the engine. Which i did this time also.

I am glad it was diesel though, fire brigade took about three minutes by which time the whole front had gone. Had it been petrol as soon as a fuel line had melted im sure it just would have gone straight to the fuel tank.

I still kept my distance though!

I had the clutch done a week since, and was getting tappet noise. In fact I remember saying to the car 'if you are going to have endless issues just lets have the engine go' which it agreed with!
