no, the fr deisel is 100% legal to tow with. it isn't the chassis that is the problem with the cupra r; it is extra engine strain that they don't want to warranty. I only tow go kart about so not much strain.
there are 2 parts to the detachable towbar. you have to get the fixed towbar for 150 ish, and then the quantum upgrade for a further 100 ish.
the only 2 difficult bits with fitting are cutting the bumper (make sure it is marked up perfectly and you've got a decent hacksaw); and wiring the electrics because not all cars have the same colour wires for each function (with some time and a multimeter this is overcome).

can the leon have a tow bar from the number plate recess ??? just remove the number plate and put a detachable tow bar in , or is the spare wheel well too deep

there are no kits for such an install, but you may be able to get something fabricated. I looked around for the most discreet way to install mine before going ahead, and as you can see in the pictures, the results is quite good.

If there is no braked towing weight stamp on your vehicle plate inside the bonnet then the vehicle is not type approved for towing. Fitting a tow-bar would invalidate insurance, if present for MOT, would make your car fail MOT test, and would make you commit offence of having a "dangerous load" the moment you atach anything to the tow bar". Asside from that, the garage should refuse to fit it as they would be guilty of "aiding and abeting" all of the above offences.

Its up to you if you want to gamble, but the Vehicle Inspectorate are a powerful organisation and the fines are massive for getting caught - Think minimum of 4 figures!!!!!!!!

Oooooooo. I've just read all this thread! Why on earth can't LCR tow?! Sound ridiclous to me.. I've seen Mirca's with towbars!

I need one as I am towing a caravan (shocking I know) it's folding if that's any better so looks like a trailer! I got a roofbox too! But it all comes off when not doing my 'touring' stuff.

I'm gonna be getting this Towequipe one fitted. Not sure I'm up to the job of doing it myself though!

i found the same problem - no one wants to fit a towbar to a lcr, because of the type approval problem. thats why i ended up diying it. if you didn't live so far away i'd be willing to help out!

i've found someone who will fit a tow bar to my FR tdi all in for £200, however i beleive it is not the quick release one but he reckons it's easy to remove using a spanner. As i wouldn't be towing very often, just the occaisional weekend this may be a good option.

need to find the money though....

Hi Danny,

I'm just about to embark on fitting a detachable towbar to my LCR, and before I start I'd like to say thanks for posting your guide for fitting it. Along with the link to Simon Ranson's guide, I think I might be sure I should be ok!
Just one thing though, is there any chance you could post a pic of the internal wiring inside the car. Not necessarily stripped right back; just the place where you've "tapped into" the existing cables.

Thanks again.
