Have a look Prawn did an excellent how to guild with lots of photos. Just search GolfGTI forum and it'll be the top result. Look for the MKIV section and it'll say: child board, maintenance and tips, the FMIC guild is down the first page.
 
so then a single pass inter cooler seems ok but how many connects will need welding into the boost pipes? i know theres a sensor with a funny diamond shape plug near the inlet. Can you buy a pipe with this connection already in place? were else and how many other connections need plumbing in. pics / guides anything :)

Oh and if you wonder why the pipes are as they are. Hot side on top and the cold on the bottom. It means that the hot air doesn't soak through the whole cooler so much when going slower.
