I cannot help you with the head but the sump I can.
You will need some silicon to reseal the sump, a new oil return gasket and a new oil pick up seal.
I had to change out my sump, due to stripped threads at the seal plug.
My pick up was looking a bit dirty and sure enough quite a bit of stuff came out when I cleaned this, PHEW!!
LOTS of seized engines are due to this part blocking

Yeah had the sump off once to put pistons in, the oil retun threads are stripped so time for the tap and die set :( how are they attached, just 2 bolts isnt it onto the oil pump? Ive put the cam in bolted down and checked for play and it seems quite solid, ive checkd to see if its compleatly cracked, so i may just re-assemble it till i can get lease on a workshop then take the engine out and overhaul it new head etc.

Yeh, the pick up is bolted to the pump but the oil return line is bolted to the outside of the sump.
This is from the turbo

Just been reading up on the net seems its a known fault with 1.8T engines, i know from last owner its had a new oil pump and can tell it has so all it can be now is a blockage so im going to have to get cleaning :(

Anyone know how to get to the tensioner on the oil pump? does the end plate have to come off?
To get the tensioner off you have to remove the cam belt and bottom end pulley and crank case cover.
Why are you wanting to remove the tensioner?
you can change the oil pump without removing this
