Surely the wishbones an subframe are designed to bend to save the chassis from being damaged in the event of a crash? when both are made from mild steel which is relatively soft anyways and both are replaceable parts?

Not really TBH.
The only parts of the car that's ment to bend to save the rest of the car is the bumpers, crash bar and crumple zones.

Wishbones are designed to bend in a heavy impact, they could quite easily make them solid so they didnt bend but this would mean chassis damage instead of just replacing bolt on wishbones.

Would be great for business for us body relignment people but not so good for parts manufactures.

Something I did listen to at college :cartman:

Perhaps the LC ones are designed to bend, the LCR ones are not.

wheres the logic?
The LC ones are like the subframe, sort of box section or two pieces of thin steel sheet formed and spot welded together. The LCR one is cast aluminimum alloy which might bend but would probably just snap.
Logic, not too sure but hope this explains what I was trying to say a bit better

i've had a look at it today when i got it back (dealer was very good, and without me prompting, put it straight up on the ramp and showed me exactly what the problem was) and its definatly not where i would have jacked the car.

Took some pictures on my phone (not very good but hopefully of some use) so will pop them up shortly

right got some photos, apologies for the quality, was rushing while at the dealer as i had a train to catch!

This is the side which is fine (sorry the angles on the photos are slightly different, but hope they will give a rough idea)

And this is the nearside which is damaged. It rusty as hell!

God knows how that happened

That's a pretty major support point of the whole suspension system. This is the wish bone (swing arm) leg mounting point. TBH I would change this ASAP. Very difficult to tell any further damage without getting new/old bits side by side to see the difference.

yea i was thinking its a little ropey, dealer assure me its alright for the time being though

will probs end up sending it back to them to do the work when ive worked out how much spending money i have further into august (as its over 500quid to sort).

Speaking to guy on what needs to be done to change it, its definatly not going to be a job done on the driveway!

£500 is WAY WAY WAY too much.
this is a very simple job that takes 4 hours with car on axle stands doing it myself.

PISH!!
No this doesn't support the engine but does have a brace to the gear box, but nothing more than 4 bolts.
It supports the steering rack, front Anti Roll Bar and wish bones

Seems to me the moral of this story is that the dealer you are visiting is trying to rip you off.
Try taking it to an independent VW garage instead, see what they say..
