ahh the fuel light lottery .. 
i would personsally make a mental note of when it comes on ,,then reset the millage counter , then have a fuel can on standby
with some fuel in it just in case ,
as soon as it coughs ,, look at the counter and use the can ,only doing this once should safice
not a recomended daily or weekly test

best way I found is to fill your tank as soon as your light comes on, see how many litres you put is and compair that with how many litres the tank holds, know if you know how many miles per gallon you do you can work out how far you can go.
